It's Bigger Than That

First, let me preface this post by stating it is not political; it's bigger than that.  It is a dose of hope in trying times.  It is a nod to the belief peace can be achieved through compassion, understanding and embracing the differences of mankind instead of attempting to mold the world in our likeness. The Nobel Peace Prize was not awarded for peace already achieved, but for the possibility of peace that lies within the grasp of President Obama and other leaders throughout the world.  It is a salute to the audacity of hope.

Like the farmer who prepares the soil, plants tiny seeds and waits months to see what he will harvest, the route to peaceful existence is a long and tedious one for any world leader.  There are conditions far beyond human control at play.  There will always be hot spots and evil forces to contend with for the world is a fluid environment with an ever-changing scenery.  Leaders come and go.  Wars begin and end.  Economies expand and contract.  Life goes on.

It matter not whether the recipient or the committee bestowing the award is conservative or liberal, Democrat or Republican.  What really matters is the recognition of efforts to make the world a better place for its present and future inhabitants.  Will the Nobel Peace prize change the course of world events?  Perhaps not, but if it gives a more peaceful tilt to our day to day life and bolsters our belief in the possibility of a world with a little less friction and a lot more kindness, I bow to the committee for their forward thinking.

They certaily blew it this time. At least they put him in the same company as Carter & Gore. The award gets closer to being a joke as time goes by.

Norma.....forward thinking?  If it does not matter who gets the prize then why even give it at all?  If it does not matter, why attach 1 million dollars to the award winner?  If it does not matter at all, then why not give it to a cartoon character?

I applaud your well wishes but the world is simply not wired that way.   It is vigilence that we need and not talk.  While we idle the time away blogging about our aspirations of peace, there are people that want the USA and Israel wiped off of the face of the earth.

> not awarded for peace already achieved, but for the possibility of peace

At first, like many people, I thought the award pre-mature at best, a farce or mockery at worst, because my then held belief was that the award was for deeds performed.  However, after hearing the case that the award may be presented for potential (let's even say inertia) I realize the review board probably has a far better handle on the intent and rules governing the award than I.  In such case I can only hope for change and not just rhetoric

I totally agree with your sentiments.  I think the committee viewed the prize as an olive branch; after nearly a decade of turbulence and a lack of cooperation, the international world is opening up to the United States becoming an ally rather than nuisance.

Hi Norma - I understand their thought process, but disagree with the award. Still, it will be interesting to look back one, two or more years from now to see what effect this has.
