Before the week is over, here is a quick linkroll of some free, online image editors. I use some of them regularly and while none of them can replace Photoshop - the mother of all desktop photo editors from Adobe - they are sometimes better suited for quick jobs like cropping, photo touchups, simple effects, mark up and sharing etc. This is just a quick link roll post, no reviews or tutorials, only a quick share. Try a few or try them all and decide which one you like.

Picnik - One of the first online image editor tools I started to use on a regular basis. E.g. for cropping images, it is pretty much the most simple to use one. Just upload the photo (even without login), crop and save it back to the PC. Done.

Aviary Phoenix - I really like this company. They have many distinct online tools for all different kind of manipulations of different media. They just rolled out multi-track audio editor tool called Myna which is simply amazing. Another very useful tool is their Firefox screen capture plugin, which makes taking a screenshot of a web page extra easy including capturing the full page, not just the visible area. It is a toolbar button so you don't even have to start another program. Once captured, the screenshot can be saved to the local disk or edited with Phoenix instantly.

FotoFlexer - Another good one with many options, including direct editing of your photos hosted on Flickr, PhotoBucket, Facebook etc.

Photoshop.com - This one is from Adobe - the maker of the #1 Photoshop software. Many options. Worth checking out.

Enjoy.

Carol - I use them for different purposes. Aviary's screen capture Firefox toolbar itself with it's integration with their Phoenix editor can be very valuable for bloggers too when capturing and annotating a website's screen for example.

Zoltan- I like picnik and used it often when on a pc. Now that I have a mac most all the tools out there are no longer needed with the new snow leapard OS. Screen capture is a cinch with Command + 4 for choosing anywhere on the screen to capture and Command +3 for entire screen capture. Then in Iphoto- well, they leave the rest in the dust.

My favorite screen capture and annotation system that is a piece of cake to use is Snapit. You can do the cool torn edging that I do with visuals, add text, cut out parts of image you don't want, add highlighting, arrows, live links, etc. Best product IMHO especially when you use a pc. I am going to my Iphoto mac class this week so I am going to compare the two.

Katerina - Yes, it's easy on Mac :) Does Command+3 captures the whole web page including scrolling for long pages? I used to stitch multiple captures together if I wanted to include portions which does not fall into the viewport. That was painful. The Aviary Firefox plugin can capture the whole page, not just the screen, with 1 click (!). iPhoto is definitely good for basic editing. But I still find picnik to be quicker for crop only (less steps). Crop and shrink is the most often used actions for me when I need a picture for a blog post.

Janie - I remember us talking about Picnik years ago. The second most used tool for me is Aviary Phoenix since their screen capture tool was released. Capture from Firefox, open it with Aviary, crop, resize, mark it up quickly and save it locally. And I am amazed by the quality of their Flash applications in terms of engineering since I saw their multi-track audio editor (Myna).

I enjoy the heck out of Picnik on my flickr photo account.  Have thought of using it on my pictures in other places, too, but Windows 7 seems to have some good tools.

Gimp is very feature rich, although I have not used it that much. Plus the X11 UI might be a bit confusing for some. We use Photoshop on the desktop. I listed the online image apps that I use (interestingly, photoshop.com is the least used by me - if ever) but if somebody is looking for some desktop image manipulation tool, Gimp definitely worth a try.

BTW: We were thinking about integrating one of these image editors with RealBird. Would that makes sense to you, RealBird users? Should we work on it? I believe 3 out of the 4 listed above has an API and we could let RealBird members click "Edit" after uploading raw images to RealBird and use one of these online editors to manipulate uploaded images. It's not on our high priority list but if there is enough interest, we can implement it fairly quickly. Can we save some time, increase productivity for you with this? Let us know. Thanks

Zolatan, Thanks for the links - sometimes a quick and easy crop or edit is all that is needed. I've bookmarked this to use later.
