It is still raining. My roof is still leaking. As if to compensate (or distract) me, nature has sent another emissary to my garden.

Giant mushroom on the lawn

The top of this alien measures about eight inches across, and is slightly pointed, like a conical straw hat. And yes, I need to mow my lawn. If it would stop raining long enough, I would!

After the downpour last weekend, bizarre-looking beings materialized. They were gone a couple of days later, back to their mother ship, I guess. I'll keep an eye on this one and see if I can spot its departure.

As you can imagine, living here in Seattle, we get our fair share of "those alien" things :-)

Robin,

Watch out, it looks like it could take off at any moment.  Perhaps a mini UFO?

I would pull that sucker out of the yard sooo fast.  Those spores from mushrooms will drop and you will have many more alien aircraft in the yard!

A near cousin of your space mushroom appeared in my garden.

They are on to us.  Organic gardeners, no pesticides and good compost.

I'm securing my forces, gloves and a small spoon to dig em out.

Robin, it's been awhile since we have had a visitor like that in our lawn!

Robin - I'm just happy for you because you have green grass and not brown dirt for a lawn.  I'm not big on watering (I hate to waste it) and my lawn (which was mostly composed of a really ugly weed like grass) took a hit early on and I've just been waiting for my chance to replant.  My backyard is pretty barren - except one little patch that has a will to survive.

Robin,

Nice, humorous way to showcase the lowly mushroom. We certainly get our share of them. :)

With all the rain we've had in the last month, we've had a large variety of these strange critters - sometimes in weird patterns.

Speaking of weird patterns, I am keeping an eye on this thing. It seems to be developing one. I will check it out and post an update tomorrow, if it's still there.Weird pattern on alien mushroom-like thingy
