Really! I think it's silly to dream of simpler days. Simple or relaxing is what we make of our time, today.

Yesterday afternoon, I picked up one of my granddaughters and took her to a nearby canyon full of chipmunks and bunnies. Armed with a baggie of oyster crackers, we set off in pursuit of new friends. We named them Alvin, Simon and Theodore even though there were too many to keep track of pouring out of the rocks.

I watched as my granddaughter sat very still with cracker crumbs around her, whispering that she was their friend. But patience is not a virtue learned by 5 and the desire to pet them would overcome her. Back under the rocks they'd scatter.

The dance would continue until the cracker crumbs were gone. It was our turn for dinner and we had to leave.

Next time we are going back to visit the bunnies. They like cooler evenings and longer shadows.

One of my sons had a knack for catching chipmonks. We would go camping and in no time he would come back with a chipmonk.

Wow, that's neat. I don't think that I've ever seen a chipmonk. I know I wouldn't want to catch one though.

Charles, It was so sweet watching her try to coax them into her hands. Maybe your son would offer a tutorial.

Gregg, if you come to the northwest Las Vegas area, I can direct you to them! They are so quick. One second we were surrounded by them and the next they'd dive back under the rocks.

Kate, What a fun afternoon. And patience is a virtue that many adults haven't mastered. Kudos to your granddaughter for the attempt! Let us know how the bunny visit goes. Have a great week!

Susan, the bunnies sit so still and observe. I wonder how close my granddaughter will get to them. She will love their fluffy white tails.

You could make good money on that older camera... truly I can't see enough years to make a grandmother :) And this is so sweet -- my niece (now age 10) has always had an affinity for furry animals and would love to be going with you.

Great story. Made me smile :) My youngest who is also five loves animals, but hasn't yet learned patience either. Every time Chuckie makes an appearence she tries to get close so she can pet him.

Our youngest daughter now the mom to the granddaughter in my story used to bend down and walk after birds whispering not to be afraid. One day, she found a ladder in the backyard and tried catching them from it. Her daughter is cut from the same cloth!
