The other day, hubby sent me this email about this phenomenal occurance in the South Pacific.  After reading the email, I immediately checked it out on snopes.com to see if it was true and - IT"S TRUE.  Here is the story of the "Birth of an Island".

The yacht 'Maiken' was traveling in the South Pacific when the crew came across a weird sight.  It was sand in the water, and the sand was floating ON TOP of the waves.

Look at these photos and imagine the thrill of experiencing this phenomenon close-up.  This is not a beach, it is volcanic stones floating on the water.

The trail left by the yacht through the sand.

Then this was spotted - ash and steam rising from the ocean.  And, while they were watching - a plume of black ash.

A brand new island formed.  Awesome!

Donne - Those are some amazing photos. I would have loved to have seen that--but not too close.

Donne- the trail through the sand immediately sent my mind to Moses and the parting of the red sea.  Great photos.  Nature is really amazing sometimes.

Donne:  Awesome pictures and accompanying story!  Mother Nature provides something better than anything a sci-fi writer could come up with!  Thanks for sharing this ...

John - I'm glad you liked them.  I was kind of astounded when I first saw them that's why I didn't believe them.  But it they're real and it actually happened.  BTW:  I would have loved to have been there.

Tammy - I guess it could look like that.  Either way you look at it, it is truly amazing.

Gene - Mother Nature is indeed truly amazing.  I'm glad you liked them.

Thx for stopping by everyone, I really appreciate it.  Have a good day.  :)

Hi Donne ~ Truly magnificent photos. They were awesome enough before I read the text too and then they just got better!

I love the sea and until I moved to Iowa always lived somewhere close to it. These photos remind me I'm overdue for a trip home...

Denise - I'm glad you liked the photos; I thought they were amazing.  As much as I love living near the coast (we're about 20mi from the nearest beach), I don't get there much these days.  I love hearing about sailing trips though.

There's a mortgage LO here on the rain who sails and I love reading his sailing posts.  Sailing is something that has always appealed to me.  I find the idea of sailing the open seas kind of exciting.  I would love to have been on this sailing excursion.

When was this, Donne?  And I wonder if they've named the island.  Gorgeous pictures.

Gene - While I've never heard of this, I've always wondered. It was exciting finding out that the pixs were actually true.

Jane - It was in August 2006 when the Maiken came upon this phenomena.  They were somewhere between Fiji and Tonga.  I'm attaching the snope.com report of the incident.
