Santa Clara Kisses Farmland Good-Bye

I suppose stories like this are inevitable. Living in a place like Silicon Valley, where growth seems constant and inevitable, you just have to expect more and more building.

This time, it is a milestone. The city of Santa Clara has just signed off on a new development on the last 17 acres of farmland left in the city.

I have lived in this community long enough to see lots of farm and farm related land get developed. The Miljevich farm in Saratoga went away years ago. I can still remember the old grain and feed place that used to be where City Center is now at Saratoga-Sunnyvale and Stevens Creek.

I suppose the real test is in how cities let these areas be developed. I know that some cities let developers cram as many units into the space as humanly possible. Your lucky if a blade of grass can find enough soil to grow.

I have yet to see what Santa Clara has approved for those 17 acres. But I can only hope that they have insisted on at least some restraint.

When I move to Santa Clara county in 1970 there were cherry orchards and stands on El Camino Real, when I left in 1974 none left, every bank in Sunnyvale had built themselves a new building. Sure wish I would have bought some real estate then.
