My owner is a home inspector in San Diego. It's difficult to get good pictures of the smaller birds at the San Diego Zoo because they usually are in smaller cages surrounded by metal mesh.

In order to get a good picture, the bird has to be towards the back of the exhibit away from the mesh.

That also means that one has to have a long focal length lens as well as a short depth of field so that the front wire doesn't show up in the picture.

I got lucky recently with a good picture of a male gang-gang cockatoo:

Gang-gang cockatoo

The gang-gang cockatoo (Callocephalon fimbriatum), lives in cool, wet forests and woodlands in southeastern Australia and Tasmania. It has distinctive call, which birders describe as a creaky gate or a cork being pulled from a wine bottle. The name comes from possibly two New South Wales Aboriginal languages, Ngunnawal and Wiradjuri.

Because the gang-gang cockatoo nests in young trees, the presence of a significant number of older trees and the loss of feeding habitat throughout southeastern Australia due to land clearing has caused a significant reduction in the population of gang-gang cockatoos. Its conservation status is still listed as a species of "Least Concern," but that might change soon.

Hey, Roy - I was hoping the name "gang-gang" had a better history behind it. I was picturing a big crime scene in Australia with the only evidence being this bird sitting there saying over and over again, "Gang! Gang!"

Hey, Caren - Thanks for the kind words. I have a ways to go still to really understand what this Canon Rebel XSi is capable of doing.

Hey, Andrea - He looks like he was posing because I have this cool burst feather on the camera and I just shoot away hoping that when I get back to the office I have at least one good picture.

Hey, Carl and Ceil - Way back in 1978 I wanted to be a professional photographer. Unfortunately I didn't have a rich mom and dad to pay my bills while I built up a portfolio.

Hey, Terry - You wouldn't believe how much fun Zoey the Cool Cat has when I get behind on reading my newspaper and go stack them all on the bed. She has this innate 19th sense that tells her when newspapers are on the bed and within a minute she'll be here rolling around in them. She could be sound asleep at the highest point in the garage, but put those newspapers on the bed and she knows.

Russel:  Neat hairdo on this fellow.  Never been much of a bird fan when it came to pets.  In the wild...perfect.  Just think it's unnatural for folks to cage this creatures.

Hey, Chris Ann - Cockatoos make great pets, even to the point that you can get them to talk with you, play the piano and drums, etc. There was a dancing cockatoo on YouTube a year ago or so. Raptors, flamingos, whooping cranes, etc., might not make such great pets.

Now isn't he a handsome dude?  ;-)  He looks like he even posed for the shot. Did you bribe him with birdie treats?  =)

Russel, it reminds me a bit of an African Grey I use to have except the red feathers were at the other end.  Thanks for suggesting this group.
