My GM is requesting all of our agents to take a brief personality profile.  So, what does this fact have to do with why my Active Rain outside blog is so important to me?  The answer to that question is revealed in the results of my test.

My score showed me to be an Amiable Analytic.  Analytic is the dominant style with amiable being secondary. According to my GM, I'm a number cruncher who's good at paperwork; plus, my amiable overlay means I like to keep everyone happy.  I think these traits are important for my short sale and foreclosure business specialization.

What's my weakness?  As you may have guessed, I tend to over-analyze and under-act.  The lesson learned is that I need to be more proactive in making contact with prospects so that my analytic style will help them solve their problems and keep them smiling.

So, why is my Active Rain outside blog so important to me?  AR puts me in a social networking environment where I can tell my story to a lot of real estate pros and consumers.  AR paves the way and lets my readers get to know me first before they decide to contact me.  I believe this is a good strategy and I'm grateful to have a venue like AR to reach out to potential clients.

But, I really need to be more active in pressing the flesh with folks I know and don't know.  At least I know what I've always suspected about myself.  And that's a good thing.

I'm glad I took the test.

Have you tried the DISC profile? It sounds very similar.

12:20pm • #2

I think this profile is featured in Judy LaDeur's material.  I'm not familiar with DISC.  I appreciate the question.  And Larry...glad I'm in good company with you.  Thanks to both of you.

Thanks for the post Jim ill look it up.

I am also familiar with the DISC profile test in that one I came out as an IS.

Jimmy... I can relate to some extent.  I tend to over analyze things sometimes.  Instead, I should just get out there and do it.  Active Rain is a great way to get your name out there and create your own voice.  That's what I am doing.  Best of luck with your message!

Jim,  My name is Sybil and i tell people that I only have one personality "most of the time".  I just finished a long conversation with Brad Andersohn and I am going to start my Outside Blog in a day or two.

Jim  Interesting, but don't get hung up on a test - you can change yourself into something with which you are not comfortable and it will show through  Karen

I think the DISC profile is the industry standard. I was a high D. I guess that means I'm a pain in the XXX!

Hi Jim, Man, you are preaching to the choir here.  I love to analyze a project - sometimes to the point of not acting on it !

Tests are a moment in time snap shot.  They can be be skewed by a bad day or as you say questions over-analyized.  Do what you are comfortable with and you will be fine.  I love my outside blog because it brings me business.

Off and on I think I want to have an outside blog. with that said, I think that I have to be more dedicated to doing at least three blogs a week or it wouldn't be worth it!.... not sure I'm ready yet. I like to blog but sporadically when I'm in the mood.

Thanks for the psot today as a reminder to me that I may get more interested as time goes on.

Jim - Perfect timing. I am in the process of upgrading my outside blog. I have a grandfathered version, but my friends and family could not subscribe. Glad to hear it is working for you. It seems you have motivated a few other members to upgrade as well.

It is nice to sometimes step outside ourselves and see what we need to work on or where we have strengths. The connection to your blog is fascinating!

6:03pm • #16

Thanks for all your great comments.  I do encourage those of you who don't have an outside blog to ask yourself why.  I'm convinced that blogs work for business development. But, you have to work at blogging.  It's a commitment just like staying in touch with your client base.  There are excellent resources on AR to guide you.

As for the personality style test, I would agree that they are just a snapshot without any real dimension, but it's a starting point for some honest self-examination of your strengths and weaknesses.  Isn't being honest with yourself the steel reinforcement of your personal foundation? Not the best analogy, but you get the idea.

And for the comment that sometimes you have to do what you'd rather not do...I agree, sometimes it's not easy to do, and it's an everyday battle for me.  Sometimes I win, sometimes not.

Thanks again.

I took the DISC several years ago and came out as an Influencer & something else. I don't remember what else but I would be interested in taking the test again. I can totally understand your under-act issues - I can get like that sometimes, too.

The gret thing about personality tests like you said is it really shows you who you are, what your strengths and weaknesses are. Identifying those weaknesses is the first step in improvement :-)

Jim,

I'm fairly new to ar, but I know what you mean.  I work for a small company and do most of my work out of my house.  Since I started reading the Blogs, commenting and writing my own, I feel like my office has expanded 1000%.  I will be starting an outside blog soon too.

Jimmy - I'm a combination of Analytical and Amiable also although I'm not sure which is dominant for me. How could I find out? When I went to Judy's website, it's just more of her stuff. I really would like to know.

I wrote a post about how I put my personality to my advantage. What I learnt is that we cant serve everyone. There will be 20-25% of real estate consumers out there that will gravitate towards each type of personality. Let the personality speak for you.

Interesting information.  I think we all need to identify our strengths and weaknesses.

I've taken a personality test through my company before (DISC).  I was high "d" with an emphasis in relationships.  Although, when they made me retake the test a couple of years later, I was surprised to see my results had changed a bit.  I actually had a stronger emphasis on relationships.  I think it is good for us to take these tests on a regular basis since our personalities have a tendency to morph over the years.

Jimmy,

Sometimes it's painful to get an assessment of your strengths and weaknesses, but, yes, for the long haul, you ought to do it. It's for your own good.

Jimmy!  i just got your email!  I had a crazy day, so proud of you & your first feature!  GImme a J!!

I agree with the AR'er above talking about the DISC test, I know I turned out to be a C which is why I love interacting behind my computer but know I need to do it more one on one.  Seems we have had similar training :D.  Congrats again!  Have fun @ your reunion!  K

We had to take one of those DISC tests when I joined Keller Williams.  They seem to be right on. I must be up there, I believe with Mark a pain in the you know what.  Happy flesh pressing, and congrats on the feature.

Thanks everyone.  And a special thanks to my AR mentor, AR Ambassador Kristin MoranKristin and her sister Sheila are very generous in their support of the San Antonio real estate community.  They sponsor social networking seminars and teach local agents and small business people what they know about Facebook, Twitter, and blogging/AR.  Good people!

The DISC profile can be taken from The Abelson Group for a very low fee. Every agent at Keller Williams Realty is required to take one as part of their initial screening in accordance to Keller Williams Realty International standard. It's amazing what you can DISCover about yourself with this tool. Well Jimmy, it's too bad that it took a outside Blog to produce these results about you versus utilizing a more analytical and a simple method such as the DISC Profile. Actually what was that test? Just curious!?

Sounds like we are both from the same mold, over analyze and under act.  I have made lots of improvement according to my last DISC test, but thanks for the encouragement to continue to improve.

Jimmy,

CONGRATS ON THE FEATURE!

I just talked about you (in a good way) and posted this:

(inspired by you)

I tried to email but it didn't go through.

Thanks for the inspiration!  Awesome job!

Thanks Sheila.  My personality style isn't the primary style of most agents, but you just need to be who your are, compensate for your weaknesses, and for me, plod instead of charge ahead.  I'm the tortoise and many other agents are the hare. That's OK with me.

The primary focus of my blog, "Avoid Texas Foreclosure" is to inform distressed homeowners of their options when: (1) their mortgage is currently in default; or, (2) they expect their mortgage to go into default. In addition, I plan to offer usable information to my fellow agents as they represent buyers and sellers in distressed property transactions.
