I thought this might be a great conversational topic for all the ActiveRain contributors because I think we all see this daily.  Do you operate your business from a position of perception or reality?  Perception being how someone thinks of you based on things such as dress, the car you may drive, the real estate investments you may own personally, the house you may live in, or all the Realtor designations that are printed on your business card.  All of these items are good and often times reflective of an agent's success in the business, but where the problem lies is if these items are obtained only to develop a perception that is not representative of you as a person.  Reality being that you operate your business from a position of you are who you are, and you will not comprise or be someone you are not in order to conduct business.

What generated my thought on this topic is part of a quote from a friend of mine.

"Reality is something most people attempt to avoid. It can never be avoided; only delayed."  Damon Johnson

If we are honest with ourselves, we most likely work in balance with how we are perceived and who we really are as a person.  I would like to take position from the standpoint of operating business in the light of reality.

Perception, though it can influence the initial thoughts of our buyer of seller, is only that perception.  Just as the quote above states, "reality can never be avoided; only delayed". If at some point you do not conduct your business in the reality of who you are, buyers and sellers will discover that your relationship is only built on the perception they formed.  Another words they can see you are conducting business in a manner that might not be reflective of you as a person.  This might lead to questions such as: Is my Realtor really helping me or are they trying to just make another commission?  Is my Realtor acting in my best interest or theirs?  None of the questions may have any basis in truth, but only formed out of perception.  When you operate your business from a position of reality, people will know you are who you are.  They know that you will not compromise at any point during or after the transaction.  Relationships with clients built in reality are strong and substantial.  There is no doubt in your intentions, or questioning because there is no doubt who they are dealing with during the transaction.  Truth exists in reality where it might not necessarily exist in perception.

The old adage "You can't judge a book by it's cover" comes to mind.  The cover can be worn and unappealing, but the content is ever so rich.  Another thought after writing this is "Be someone your not, and you will be discovered".

What is your view on perception and reality in the real estate profession?

2 Comments on Perception or Reality? How do you operate your business?

If you give the perception you are honest and up front it will not take very long for Mr & Mrs buyer and seller to see through you if you are not and you will be fired.....I believe the majority of realtors realize this....

I would have to go with perception. Sellers want a realtor who can sell their home for the most money in the shortest possible time. That's the perception you want.  Reality is you have little control over the buyers.
