Thanks for the idea Marilyn.

MICHIGAN IS BROKE....... MICHIGAN IS SCRAMBLING TO RAISE REVENUE EVERY WAY IT CAN.....    Plans are afoot to extend bar hours from 2AM to 4AM.   The aim is to attract more alcohol sales and there-by drag more loot into the state's empty coffers.

AGAIN......MICHIGAN IS FLAT BUSTED!!  but there's confused logic here.

Everyday there are television public service announcements warning folks about the dangers of drinking and driving.   There are on-going warnings about the dangers of alcohol on health and the misery it causes many families.   The newspapers are filled with alcohol related traffic accidents causing property damage and death.    In short.......TOO MUCH ALCOHOL IS NOT A GOOD THING.    Everyone agrees on this.    However, it is good business for state revenues.

Under the plan Michigan bar owners would pay an extra $1,500 for the privilege of staying open longer.   Am I hearing this right????

Think of all those $1,500 per bar payments, liquor taxes and money from drunk driving fines they'll drag in.    Taxes and fines are big business that bring in billions of extra dollars every year to treasuries.     But.......think also of those who pay for the privilege of extra drinking with their lives, money and the heartbreak that excess drinking brings.    Most of us know someone who is a drunk driver.....or has been the victim of a drunk driver.

On one hand the state is saying... "Don't Drink and Drive."    On the other hand they have plans to increase drinking hours which will encourage just that.   Excessive drinking dulls the mind, causes liver damage, is a drain on the bank account and causes accident, death and injury.   It's a major cause of family break up.

The state also wants us to quit smoking.   They know the risks of smoking.....and smokers know the risks as well.....but that doesn't stop the tax profits from flowing into state coffers.   Almost yearly the taxes on cigarettes go up.   Legislators warn you against smoking while reaping big rewards from cigarette taxes.   Is there a conflict of interest here???

I wonder what would happen to state budgets if state legislators didn't have alcohol and tobacco to drawn on for extra revenue??   Would they begin placing a sales tax on healthy things like vegetables and milk.     Hmmmmm.

Sin taxes and extended bar hours just show how bereft of new ideas legislators are when it comes to bringing more money into their treasuries.    This seems to prove the best and the brightest never enter politics..

That's my view......   What do you think?

Sincerely, David

It seems like whenever I hear of the worst of the economic downturn, it ends up in Michigan. I know people in Ann Arbor and they were having real estate woes years before anything was other than excellent here.
