Once upon a time there was a lonely real estate agent. She worked from her home office. And as much as she enjoyed it, sometimes it was lonely. Every morning she checked her email, made her phone calls and reviewed her paperwork.  When clients wanted to see properties, she made appointments and showed them houses. When potential clients wanted to list homes she prepared CMAs and met with them. Several times  a month she paid her bills and reviewed her paperwork.

Life was good, but it was boring.

lonely desk

One day, while reading a real estate publication, she came across an article that talked about a website called ActiveRain. Always trying to be cutting edge, this lonely real estate agent logged on to the ActiveRain site and became a member. She snooped around the site and read some interesting things. She decided to write a blog post and held her breath as she posted it live to ActiveRain. And one by one, people read what she wrote.

Each day, she would log on to AR and read what others were writing. Sometimes she would send them an email but most often she would post comments and they would respond. These same people started posting comments on her posts and she would respond. Eventually, more and more people posted comments and she had more and more people that she was communicating with on AR. Soon she had ActiveRain Associates.

Eventually, she decided not to renew her newspaper advertising. She had never gotten any direct clients from the advertising and her improved web presence as a result of ActiveRain gave her credibility with the kinds of clients that she sought, anyway.

Little by little, the lonely real estate agent realized that she wasn't lonely anymore. Her home office had
Unity hands become her office at the center of the real estate industry. She had access to the best and the brightest from all over the country. When she had a technical question, it was just minutes before she received a collaborative answer. She could share her ideas with potential clients and publish information that was helpful to buyers and sellers. When she was frustrated, she could look to her new colleagues for sympathy and advice and when she needed new ideas there was no shortage of people ready and willing to help. She could share her ideas with potential clients and publish information that was helpful to buyers and sellers.

This lonely real estate agent had become a real estate agent with a huge network of caring and talented real estate agents to work with and found a large community of potential clients with whom to communicate.

Thanks, ActiveRain...you have changed the way I do business. Life is good and it is NOT boring!

This pretty much explains my situation also. I became the sole Realtor of my company yet I never feel alone. I learn so much on AR than I ever did the first 4.5 years. This IS a wonderful place.

Holly, lonely never again because of Active Rain! I really enjoyed this post.

Holly, as a newbie to AR, I am psyched to forge new friendships and associations with some very interesting people here at AR. I find some of the blogs invaluable,....some silly, but hey, we all need to take a break from RE once in awhile. The instant connection to a slew of professionals across the country is exciting.

This story can be repeated almost as many times as there are AR members. As independent contractors regardless of the office we work in, we do spend a lot of time alone. When on AR we're not alone anymore because the comments and friends we make assure us that there's always somebody there. Nice post.

I so share your sentiments.  In fact, I feel like I have learned more from just my short time on AR than I ever learned in my CE classes.

Holly, I work in a great office with great people, but I still find the info and sharing on AR invaluable.  It's a view into the big picture of real estate and the input of all the experts in all different niches around the country.  It's become my first goto source for all things real estate related.

Hi Holly.  Good for you!

This career can be lonely.  Surprises people not in the loop, but we don't have coworkers.

AR is a great group of individuals who will keep us all on "the cutting edge".

Thanks for writing,

Holly, I too am SO glad for Active Rain as I am more often than not the only one in our small office and am s lonely most of the time that when someone does come into the office I talk their ears off!  Active Rain has given me someone to "talk to" when I'm alone and not busy. I find it's a place for guidance, knowledge, comraderie and a place that I feel safe expressing myself on the internet.

I work at home too and it can get really lonely. My first encounter with Active Rain was when I was working for a franchise. My broker was never available to answer questions and I had to turn to the internet in search of help. Thankfully there were some nice people on here that guided me on those questions(including guiding me to get out of there and strike out on my own).

Hi Holly, "Once upon a time..." I expect that there were lots of lonely REALTORS (all caps BTW :-)before ActiveRain. And as many have said they can identify with your story. One of the really nice things about our ActiveRain family is that it continues to grow, bringing new ideas and people together in ways that benefit one and all. That may not seem like something so significant but if you think about it, there is no other such real estate action network in the universe. You can join clubs, schools, business enterprises or anything else you can think of and no where would you get the support like you do in the Rain. Nowhere. People here in the Rain actually care and they actively prove it. The possibility for lifelong friendships is a daily occurrence and I am sure if you haven't already developed that kind of special friendship, you will. It is almost a certainty. One of the other huge advantages besides all the technology, real estate and mortgage information is the state of the art economic and market information that you have access to from around the country. When you are working with your clients, you have a wealth of information to pull from and you become one the most educated practitioners today in real estate and that is a true and measurable benefit for your clients. Congratulations on your wonderful featured post and it is well deserved.
