Earthquake preparedness is a serious matter, and California is once again demonstrating a commitment to making sure residents are prepared in the event of an earthquake.

The Great California ShakeOut 2009 is set for this Thursday, October 15th, at 10:15 am, with over 6.5 million already registered to participate in the largest earthquake drill ever (last year's event, the first, had almost 5.5 million taking part in drills at home, at work, in schools and a wide range of communities establishments).

Why not learn more about Drop Cover and Hold On and the reasons behind this strategy for protecting yourself in an earthquake, even if you decide to not participate, or can't for some reason.

Here is the Great California ShakeOut 2009 information IN SPANISH

And for those interested in learning about specific earthquakes that have occurred in California and neighboring Nevada recently, check out this earthquake map. Information is generally posted within an hour or so of an earthquake.

Hi Jeff!  This is great information for your area.  Luckily we don't have to worry about these in NC but, then again, you do live in a gorgeous area--I guess earthquake preparedness is the trade off for your beautiful surroundings!

Debe - I am pretty impressed with all the planning that has gone into this and the huge amount of resources and information available for folks. You just never know. Yes, earthquaks are a trade-off, but fortunately this area has only had very minor ones for years. Closer to LA is another story, as is San Francisco.

Hi ya,

Wow, it's that time again? Like you I agree with being prepared, it's just a matter of time for us.I've got quite a few things on hand myself in case of an emergency.  It's nothing I'm really worried about, yet when it does happen some will be impacted more than others.

Btw, I'm glad to see the bi-lingual offering.

Hey Jeff, well I guess the Ides of October is a great day to shake, rattle and roll. As a California native, I've been through the drill for decades, but I always appreciate a refresher course!

Sorry, Jeff, I can't read your post, my screen is shaking too much.  Oh dear, those earthquakes.  The bane of California.  I keep thinking of L.A. Story with Steve Marting, every time there is earthquake talk.

Jeff I know that if I lived out there I would be participating in this.  I hope the big one never hits, but it is good to know what to do if it ever does.

Jeff, I remember the tremors in Oakland when I lived there in the 70's.  I don't remember having earthquake drills.  Great information.  Never hurts to be prepared.

Lynda - yep, me too. You hate to think about it but it IS the reality. And I like the Spanish too, Perhaps there will be other languages developed.

Barb - well reminders never hurt, and especially for folks who are newer here - there are lots of us.,

Jane - LOL. I love that movie. That scene when they were all at brunch with the earthquake was a hoot. As we a number of the other classiv California-isms.

George - well I know how you are. LOL

Jeff, having been in the middle of two or three earthquakes while living in California, being prepared is so important. Scarey stuff - and have you noticed, they generally happen in your sleep waking you up to the thrashing, crashing and lots and lots of noise. Everytime the ground moves wherever I am, I'm on alert. Batteries, flashlights, water, etc. are so important. Good information....

Wow -- this is a great thing..  I was in SF during the '89 earthquake.  We had a vague plan for everyone to meet at a "fern bar" on Polk Street.. it worked.  They had candles there and a radio... we then made plans ... it was a bit scary and no one really had a clue what to do.

Jeff - Great stuff for everyone to be prepared in the event of an earthquake.   We've been through some pretty scary hurricanes but I can't even imagine what it would be like to deal with an earthquake.
