West Haven Veterans Memorial - Veterans Walk of Honor - Bradley Point Park
In the beautiful West Shore beach area of West Haven CT is the Veterans Walk of Honor at Bradley Point Park. The Veterans Council began the first of three campaigns selling bricks in November 2006 for $50 to honor and commemorate veterans The bricks have personalized messages in charcoal lettering that line the 100-yard walkway.
Built by City Point Construction Co. Inc., the first phase of the walkway and the city's first Korean War Memorial was dedicated in May of 2007.
Along the sidewalks of the Veterans Walk of Honor are commemorative bricks with the names of local veterans.
In the second phase of the Veteran Walk of Honor dedicated in May 2008 a granite memorial was dedicated in honor of Army Pfc. William A. Soderman who during World War II. Army Pfc. Soderman received the Medal of Honor while defeding his post at a road junction near Rocherath, Belgium in December 1944. Soderman was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on October 12, 1945 by President Harry Truman. Soderman passed away in 1980 and on July 1, 1984 the city dedicated a memorial flagpole in his honor.
On each side of the Sodermann memorial are 14 grave markers mounted on black granite pillars displaying the insignias of all the branches of the military and veteran's organizations for every war fought in American history.
Further down the walkway the largest monument in the Veterans Walk of Honor is the Vietnam Memorial. There are three black granite slanted panels with the names of all of the residents who served and died during the war in Vietnam.
The fourth panel is a map of Vietnam with the inscription "All gave some, some gave all" sits at the base of three flagpoles and surrounded with the insignias of our military service branches.
The third phase of the Veterans Walk of Honor was dedicated in May 2009 and now has approximately 1500 bricks installed.
Bradley Point Park marks the spot where the British invaded West Haven on July 5, 1779. The park has a 1.7 mile walkway and sandy beach area and is located on the west shore of the New Haven harbor on Captain Thomas Boulevard.
