One of the interesting things about photographing landscapes is that a very large three dimensional subject has to be compressed into a very small two dimensional image.

And it can be very difficult to covey the breathtaking enormity of a panorama on a single "slide." And although it represents a mere "thumbnail" of reality, a good landscape photo can serve as a virtual suggestion of an exquisite vista.

So it is best to choose a characteristic of the subject that you want to emphasize, be it color, form, or effect. The result should communicate the artist's intentions to even the most casual viewer.

So don't just shoot a scene because it's "pretty." Rather, thing about the artistic message you wish to highlight ahead of time. It makes the finished product much more interesting!
