If you are with a group of people in real life...do you talk to them face to face or...........

....behind your computer?

....or on your cell phone? texting?...to others?

This photo was shot recently with some relatives of mine, a complete candid shot that was with relatives that we see very little.

I have also seen this at Conventions and ReBar Camps...you finally meet face to face and everyone is twittering.

Disclaimer: I love Social Media and Social Networking but when I meet you face to face...be present, be there. Nothing like good old fashion talking and engaging face to face.

Talk to each other

Not so Wordless....

This is priceless.  They all look so serious.  Who knows?  They could even be "speaking to each other".

Missy,

Funny picture. Are they IM'ing each other? Another social no-no...a pack of cigs on the sofa.

Missy,

That reminds me of when we go to visit my son and his family.  Gee and I thought that we may have been a little weird.  :-)

Missy, that's hilarious.  They are probably on MSN talking to each other. :)

Like you, I also like people to be present when they are with me.  I can't stand to be sitting with someone who is constantly picking up their phone and texting back and forth while we're talking.  It's just plain rude and disrespectful.  Unless it's an emergency, it can wait a half hour.

It used to be TV that was a time sucker.  Now I think it's the laptop/PDA/Iphone/etc!

Missy - Even when family gets together to relax everybody is still busy with social media.

Eye contact seems to be a thing of the past--I recently had breakfast with a friend and her eyes were constantly darting to her Blackbery held beneath the table.  We must remember we control the devices, not the other way around.

That is a great photo, Missy!

Wouldn't it be funny if they were communicating with each other via social networking instead of face to face?  LOL

Welcome to the new world.

Reminds me of the Verizon commercial just with computers instead of phones!

Can't decide if this pic is amusingly benign or just a bit scarey.

I wonder if they are emailing each other while sitting there...good photo

Hi Missy. In the organization where I used to work, we had a head of human resources who used to text constantly in every single meeting, no matter who was speaking.  The head of human resources!  You'd think he'd have a clue about how to be "human" during a meeting!

My son is 11 and likes to get on MSN to "speak" to his friends.  I ask him why he doesn't pick up the phone to do that.  And I know I sound about 93 years old when I do it : )

Missy, I noticed a similar thing with kids waiting for the school bus. They all have Ipods growing out of their ears. What happened to communication?

It would be funny, except it is the new reality.  Remember the old "What type of learner are you?" Well, now we have a whole new category.  Ask any teacher!

This is so much the new reality.  You know in 2010 gen Y will outnumber baby boomers.  Gotta get with it to keep up.

Ha ha ha. Funny photo (even though maybe it's not too funny...). I do see lots of people talking during REBar Camps, more so than some of the other venues. Maybe that's why I wish I could go to every single REBar Camp!!

Missy, I know people that won't return a phone call or email, but if I text them I get a very quick response.

Wow that pictures is truly worth a 1,000 words.  The first one that came to mind was, "how sad."  The computer is a wonderful machine, but todays youth is losing the thrill, challenge and fun of dealing with people face to face.  Troubling

Well who knows who there are really talking toor what they are doing, but I see it at my house especially when my kids and boyfriends (and now 1 husband visit). Everyone has laptops and conversations go one while folks are doing whatever on their laptops, or even sharing information they are reading on the news, etc. The dynamics have sure shifted.

I also see lots of people, oung and older, at parties and other events on their phones texting. watching videos, and much more. Social intereaction has become much more complex, but also less human.

This is so true.  I see this too much. I've had my daughter call me from her bedroom to see whats for dinner!  (she'll never find out that way!)  I agree with your statement about "being there".  I have a niece who no longer enjoys coming over because I don't allow cell phones at meals! I blame the parents.

Missy

It's pretty safe to say that they are getting into what they do, and it's pretty safe to say they have a good person to go to if they have questions. Great picture.

Thanks for all your comments, I took it in Nashville this summer.

It was just funny to me, that several of the cousins were all on lap tops.

I had to snap it.

John

Remember when we thought it was funney if someone said, "I'll have my people call your people"  Well, this takes it to a whole new level.

If and when we ultimately meet, I promise, I'll turn off my cell phone...if you will too!

Missy - There's nothing better than in person contact. whether family, friends or business. But, as far as families go there needs to be designated times when the technology is turned OFF.

Just think of the possibilities; what technology software/gadget will be the norm 2-5-10 years from now that we haven't even thought of yet.

How sad, that these are kids that haven't seen each other for quite sometime, yet they burry their noses in the computer. I sound old!!!

However, I love the photo! Do you carry your camera with you everywhere now? LOL!!!
