Vacation Spot of the Day - Rome, Italy

 Head to Rome, the Eternal City to enjoy mild temperatures in spring or fall. You will find the Spanish Steps delightful in May as azaleas are in bloom and crowds are smaller. That said, the majority of tourists go to Rome in the muggy heat of summer. For a true taste of Rome, do not visit in August. Many Italians take their own vacations that month and leave Rome (often for the beach). As a result, some hotels, restaurants and shops close, leaving the city void of locals and full of sweaty tourists.

If luxury accommodation in Rome is your goal, go all out and stay in the swank hotels and inns in the historic center of town (centro storico). For everyone else, stay near the Campo dei Fiori. You will find quaint plazas (piazzas) hidden around many corners where the true essence of Rome lies. As a general rule, the smaller the hotel, the more personal the atmosphere, and thankfully Rome is full of family-run bed and breakfasts which are a great alternative to the huge chain hotels. Look to find b&bs in Trastevere and near the train station (Stazione Termini).
