I just want to tell a little story.  You might find something useful in it, or you might not... it is just a story. 

In the beginning...

Some of you might know that I used to live in the Twin Cities of Minnesota.  I lived in both Minneapolis and St. Paul at various times during the mid and late 1980s.  While living there I had a friend named Ross that was also a car guy... and he introduced me to Autocrossing.  In fact, I autocrossed his 85 GTI. 

While autocrossing at a club event (I think it was the 3M Sports Car Club... but I'm not positive), sometime around 1988, I met this guy named Greg.  He was also autocrossing, and he announced at the events... giving the times and talking about the sport while people made their timed runs.  At one particular event Greg mentioned to me that he had a goal of race announcing for a network.  He wanted to be one of the guys in the booth that did the racing version of a "play by play" or color commentary.  To that end, Greg was spending time at the autocrosses tuning his craft. 

In the middle...

In early summer 1989 I moved to Georgia.  Probably a little over a year later, while at the SCCA Run-offs at Road Atlanta (I think it would have been 1990), I saw Greg.  He was camping at the event, and had come down from MN to see the races.  I don't know exactly how it happened, but the track ended up needing someone to call the back half of the track.  At Road Atlanta, the back of the track isn't visible from the booth.  They put a scissor lift back, near turns 5 and 8, with Greg on top of it where he could see the cars for most of the lap.  The booth on the front straight could see them for most of the rest of the lap. 

Greg was now half of the announcing team for the Sports Car Club of America's biggest annual event, the championships for all of their national classes. 

I ran into Greg a couple of years later while he was announcing for an IMSA GT series race.  Now he was on Speed TV as an announcer.  In fact, over the next few years, I noticed Greg on TV a lot.  He was calling motocross and sports cars.  He was calling races all over the US... and even some outside of the US. 

Simple dream... excellent execution...

Greg had a vision of where he wanted to go.  He actively sought opportunities to get there.  He made himself available.  In fact, somewhere around here I have a business card that he gave me in 1988 promoting his motorsports announcing. He also got to spend more time behind the wheel in amatuer sports car racing than I did.

I'd love to say that Greg Creamer is a close friend, but he is just a guy that I met a few times over the course of ten years or so...  Oddly, I just found out that he lives about 30 minutes from me here in GA. 

Does Greg have some lessons to teach?  Absolutely.  And I'm sure there is a LOT more to his story than the random episodes I was party to.
