I usually kid Darcy about her lists.  She makes them for every project that we do, whether it is going out of town on vacation, painting the house and everything in between.  I shouldn't kid her, this is what most of the efficiency experts tell us to do so that we're more productive.  While Darcy does her lists on yellow legal pads, there are a lot of other things that we can use, from PDA'S, to planning systems both paper and computer based.

Like I said, I should not be giving Darcy a bad time about her lists, it does help you maintain focus and not allow the details to fall through the cracks.  I would suggest that we should be doing this in our daily activities.  We should prioritize our tasks then focus on them in order of priority until they have been completed.  This keeps our minds from wandering, or from putting off things that we find unpleasant even if they are necessary to accomplish.

There have been books and series of books written on this subject of time management and lists, entire companies and fortunes have been built on this training.  I am not saying that I am any type of expert, but I would suggest that you start small, by small, I mean a short list of things to do each day.  I would also suggest that you include some personal goals in this daily list, things like exercise, spending time with family or what ever.

I would suggest that you pick at least 6 to 10 things to do to grow your business along with the personal items. Things to include would be prospecting (you choose the method most effective for you), doing client follow up ( I would write down each client that you need to contact that day.  That way no one is overlooked.), writing a blog here on Active Rain, emails, other phone calls, following up with the support agencies (appraisers, loan officers etc.,).

The other reason for doing things by using lists is that there is something empowering about checking things off of a list.  There is also something empowering about looking at the end of the days list and seeing everything checked off.  It builds confidence and helps you know that you're doing the most productive things you can be doing each day.

Anyway, these are my two cents on lists!  Make it a great week!

When I do magic shows I check and check and check and check. It would be horrible if suddenly on starge I turned and something was not there...magic has taught me this and it carries over in business

I, like Darcy, make lists--ON PAPER.  lol  however, I don't always get everything done that is on my list for the day and it makes me crazy.  I always get off on rabbit trails it seems.  But it is a good practice.

Tony & Darcy, I think of lists as mini-goals - short term of course. You get so much more done in your day. Nice post!

I hate making lists but will admit they are very helpful as long as one keeps them handy.

Bob: I haven't read "What Matters Most" by Hyrum Smith, I have read almost all of the Stephen Covey books.  I will have to check this book out.

Sandra: Thanks for the encouragement!

Doug: Thanks for your comments!  I appreciate your stage example.

Jean: I need to follow your and Darcy's example, I keep lists in my head, but my memory isn't what it used to be!

Wanda: Great points!

Richard: I am with you!  I need to get better at lists and keeping them handy!

Thanks everyone for reading and commenting on this post!

I'm with Darcy,  I even take my yellow legal pad to bed with me at night so when I wake up my 4 to 5 times each night I can jot down the things I've forgotten to write down during the day.  That's called really keeping it handy!

Sue, I don't think that Darcy takes the yellow pad to write things at night, but it is a good system to make notes and check off things that need to be done.

I don't like making those list, but they keep me on track and focused. Very rewarding to highlight them off the list too.

Tony and Darcy - These two sentences sum up my exact feelings about lists: "The other reason for doing things by using lists is that there is something empowering about checking things off of a list. There is also something empowering about looking at the end of the days list and seeing everything checked off."

And at the end of the list, when everything is accomplished, I love the sound of the "TA DAH" that goes off in my mind:-)

Kathy: that's funny!

Lee and Carol: That's me, I don't really like them, but they do help me accomplish more.

Myrl: That is why I do lists, when I do them (I will admit that I need to do a better job of them)
