In 1982 Knoxville TN was home to the World's Fair.  The Sunsphere was designed and erected for the event and still stands in Knoxville TN as the unofficial city symbol.  Since the World's Fair the park grounds have undergone a series of renovations and are now home to the Knoxville Convention Center, Knoxville Outdoor Symphony Amphitheater, World's Fair Fountains, Veterans Memorial, World's Fair Playground, and the Knoxville Museum of Art.

I'm curious to know what's going on inside the sphere.  Is there a restaurant or something inside?

Richard, think it might be a big old disco ball?

The sunsphere has a great observation area to allow you to have a 360 view of Knoxville and also contain a World's Fair museum.

It also is the home to a few businesses.

And last but, not least there is also a really cool bar/small resturant as well- great specials and some amazing homemade spinach and artichoke dip.

Knoxville's Famous Sunsphere was also featured in an episode of "The Simpsons"- in the cartoon there was a wig shop up in the globe.

Christine and Jennifer,

Great pictures of your city. The ball looks like it should slide down the tower on New Year's Eve. :)

Girls, I can't take the heat. Please go back to posting to the photography group as you wish. I'm sorry for making anything of it. I was truly trying to help and I even tried to do it in the nicest way I knew to.

My grandparents took me to HemisFair in 1968 and that pretty well got me addicted to World's Fairs, so I made it to Spokane in 1974, Knoxville in 1982, New Orleans in 1984, and Vancouver in 1986. Sadly, the one for Chicago, scheduled for the early 1990s, was canceled. Nothing has been in North America since Vancouver.

I had been to Memphis and Nashville in 1978, so getting to Knoxville in 1982 gave me the "Big Three of Tennessee." (Sorry, Chattanooga.)
