Kauai Hindu Temple Photo

I had a delightful experience today when I "stumbled across" a tour of the Hindu temple being build above Kapaa on our little island of Kauai.  Granite slabs are being hand-chisled in India and shipped 10,000 miles to Kauai for the construction which has been ongoing since 1991.  The gold leaf dome overlays are stunning in the bright Kauai sunshine.

 Aloha!

I will actually be in Kauai in November on my 1st real vacation in 3 years.  Maybe I will stop by and check this out in person.

There should be lots of time left to see the construction as it looks like an endless project to me.  So far it's 18 years and counting.  Everything is being done by hand, even the quarrying of the granite is by hand rather than dynamite.

Christine & Jennifer- How cool that you are coming to Kauai.  Let's network over lunch one day.

Richard - That is a great picture.  And how interesting that they've been working on this since 1991.  And it looks like the granite work is really ornate.  Beautiful.

Gabriela-  We're in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, please come visit!

Hi Toula- It's an immense project with no particular end date in mind.  I think it's a labor of love.

Susan- The granite is all hand-chisled, even the designs--no power tools.

Boy, that is beautiful, Richard.  An Indian friend of mine's daughter and son-in-law are moving to Oahu.  I will have to make sure they visit. (Sorry, he is being housed by the Navy :) )

Hi Jane- Have them call first.  There are tours twice a week but the days vary.

Very beautiful, but most temples and churches are. I always have to wonder, though, if someone's God needs that, or if the money could better be spent to house the homeless, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick............

Eighteen years is a long time to build such a building, still I marvel at the detail and that it is all hand crafted.  It's really a beautiful building - thanks for posting it Richard!

Throughout history, castles and churches have been some of the grandest buildings.  I'd heard of this one for years before I finally went to see it and it was quite an interesting tour.
