My owner is a home inspector in San Diego.I've always been a fan of birds because they were beautiful, they could fly, and they would always come around when I had some old, crusty bread to feed them.

In 1963 when "The Birds" was released, I was only eight, and I could not understand why my mom and dad would not let me go see the movie. They said it was a scarey movie, which didn't make sense, even though the name associated with the movie, Alfred Hitchcock, wasn't exactly a nice-sounding name.

Every time I see a flock of birds just sitting around waiting for something -- who knows what? -- I think of Alfred Hitchcock and "The Birds."

The birds pictured above are, of course, pigeons (Columba livia domestica), more properly referred to as "rock pigeons," "feral pigeons," or "feral rock pigeons."

Like flamingos, but unlike most other birds, pigeons produce crop milk to feed their young, a task accomplished by both sexes.

Pigeons are distributed everywhere on Earth except for Antarctica, the Artic, and the driest areas of the Sahara Desert. They have adapted to most of the habitats available on planet Earth, and are just waiting to hitch a ride to the Moon or Mars, if they haven't already done so.

Did you know that the extinct Dodo bird was a pigeon? You did? Alright, then, smarty pants, what is a young pigeon called?

Personally, I love pigeons. I love their walk, their talk, their iridescence....

The guy above was a homeless person in downtown San Diego, but he had his faithful Rock Pigeon. They walked up and down the Embarcadero with the pigeon never leaving his head. I gave him $10 to take the picture.

Having worked in NYC for many years, I'm not a big fan of pigeons.

It is interesting how we can get so attached to animals such as this picture shows. I'd hate to have crap down the back of my shirt though, haha.

Great post, Russel. Sometimes the creatures we take for granted turn out to be quite interesting. Like squirrels.

Cheers,

Robin

I love to read a great post like this one. Please keep them coming!

Russell, I'm like that too ... thinking of the movie anytime that I see a big flock of birds ... especially the horde of black birds migrating through here in the spring and fall and breeding in my pine tree!  Thanks for the great post!

Hi Russel, Maybe you should find out which pigeon called the meeting and ask what the agenda is. :)

Years ago, I drove an Austin Healy Sprite and usually had the top down.  I wore a scarf on my head to keep my then long hair from being macrame'ed by the wind.  Apparently the scarf attracted some crows, who started divebombing me!  They tore my scarf and my scalp, and followed me for about 2 miles attacking me.  It was pretty scary and I'm lucky I didn't crash the car.  Never had bad luck with a pigeon though - they're pretty sweet.

Russel, I saw the "Birds" for the first time when I was 12 years old...never quite looked at large groups of birds them same ever again.  As for your picture...I can only imagine the mess.

I'm going with squab...sounds too easy though!

Hi, Russell.  I saw the movie and didn't help me like birds in general.  I do, however like hummingbirds, cardinals, titmouse (lol it's for real) because they're all colorful and cute.  Pigeons are messier, bigger, and poop more.  lol.

The smarty pants answer is...squab.

They say birds of a feather flock together... There's proof!  Thanks for sharing

Nice photo of the iridescence.

Zoey the Cool Cat looks as if she is just waiting for those birds to move, and she will catch one! I never saw The Birds, also having parents who said it was scary. By the time I was old enough to choose to watch it, I didn't want to see what I imagined it would be :}

Hey, Jeff - Do New Yorkers not love their pigeons? LOL

Hey, Steve - I suspect that his pigeon knows better. Squab. I had no idea what squab was until today, and then I was reminded of the "Two-and-a-half Men" episode where Jake's grandmother asked him if he liked squab. It didn't sound good, so I never Googled it.

Hey, Terry - But they are so beautiful with their orange eyes and green and purple iridescence. You just need to hang out with me some day so I can show you how interesting, smart, funny, and beautiful they are.

Hey, Robin - Totally agree.

Hey, Jeremy - There are many more in my Morning series: http://activerain.com/blogs/russel/tags/mornings

Hey, Sallie - There's a huge flock of crows or ravens that fly over my place around 6:00 a.m. going north, and then they fly back south around 6:00 p.m. Never fails. Like clockwork.

Hey, Susan - I think this pigeon was the ringleader since he was the only non-iridescent one.

I'm Head Pigeon around here

Hey, Nick - Squab it is.

Hey, Yolanda - Zoey the Cool Cat poops a lot, but I still love her.

Hey, Diane - Cliches come from somewhere!

Hey, Steve - Been wondering where you've been.

Hey, Shoshana - I have seen all of Hitchcock's movies now. I've liked them all, too.

Now how are we supposed to focus on the topic of the birds, with Zoey looking so darned cute?!! That is adorable! OK. Focusing.... birds, birds, birds. I'll go read again. lol

Squab - oh, yes.  I've seen squab cooked on Iron Chef on the Food Network.  I knew they were pigeons but didn't realized they were referring to "young pigeons."  Definitely not something I want to try.

The movie still scares me!  The scariest scene to me is when the birds come in through the chimney.

The pigeons on the fence look like they are having a real estate convention.  Nice shots of the pigeons but I am not a fan of piegeons at all.  Keep the photos rollin...

Russell:

I have also never looked at birds the same way since that film.  But, "Psycho" was worse. It definitely effected that way I took a shower forever...

Nice photos.  You caught "the birds" very well.
