5 Simple Ways to Save Water

By

Remember growing up when we never thought twice about water? Just the idea that people in the future would be paying to buy bottled water would have made us all laugh hysterically.Today is Blog Action Day, a day when bloggers around the world unite to talk about one topic. This year's topic is Climate Change. I am a strong believer that grass roots efforts can make a difference.

I've decided to focus on water usage. 71% of the earth is covered with water, but only 3% is drinkable. Here are some easy ways to reduce the amount of water that you use.

Green Plumbing:
How To Conserve Water

1. Turn off the water when you brush your teeth, shave and wash your hands.

2. Install a low flush toilet or don't flush each time. My mother is fond of saying "If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down. " A regular toilet uses 3.5 - 5 gallons per flush, so this can quickly save quite a lot of water.

3. Take a shower rather than a bath. Generally a shower will use 1/3 the water of a bath (as long as you don't take those marathon showers I did as a teenager!)

4. Make sure your toilet isn't leaking. Put a few drops of food coloring, dark colored fruit juice or instand coffee in your tank. Put in enough so that there is a deep color in the tank. Make sure no one uses the toilet for 30 minutes. Check the toilet bowl. If any color is in the bowl, you have a leak. A silent leaking toilet can waste 30 - 500 gallons of water a day!

5. Mulch your garden. Mulch not only reduces evaporation of moisture from the soil, it will also help cut down on weeds.

Small, easy changes can make a big difference in the amount of water we all use.

Nice idea.  The number 1 idea (brushing teeth) is the first one that came to my mind.

Deb - Love this post, I am all for the protection and preservation of the environment.

Interesting Note - Less than 1% of that 3% of drinking water on this lovely planet is actually accessible.. So let's not waste what we have!

Thank you Cindy & Betina for your comments!  Glad you're going to participate in Blog Action Day Peggy.  I didn't know that so much of the drinkable water is inaccessible Gina - thanks for passing that on!

Check your water bill each month and if water used varies by even a 1000 gallons, check your commodes and underneath sinks for any little drip.

I also check my bill each month and make sure I have a history of usage to compare. We just found a silent leak in a bathroom..my water company gave me a courtesy credit on my bill. It pays to save.

Another idea is to catch rainwater to water plants inside and out. Great ideas and I 'm sure we can all benefit from these and others.

Good reminders, Deb! We've done things like this for ages and people thought we were just cheap! I also water the plants with the leftover water in people's glasses after dinner. And it's amazing how much water a rain barrel can capture. It seems like just the right amount to water potted plants outside.

It's funny you say that Deena - growing up we used to say my father was cheap until the energy crunch of the 70's hit and then we thought he was wonderfully energy conscious.

Thanks for the iead about the food coloring in the toilet bowl. that is a freat way to test for a leaky toilet. I once had 2 leaky toilets in my house and it not only wasted a lot of water but it made my septic drain field soggy. I need to check my toilets again soon.
