Yesterday I received an interesting email from someone who reads my blogs.  It's not a member but an outsider looking in...a real estate agent who never tried nor cared to join ActiveRain...based on "what they heard!"

They wondered why I placed all of my quality content here on this network rather than build my own blogs.

"Since you are an ActiveRain Ambassador and getting paid by the network  Don't you think you might disclose it?"

Blah..blah...blah...blah..blah.. I think you get the jest of it...

Dissing Activerain, Why?

Long winded...disrespectful and made my blood boil.  :)  I think I have my mojo back!

My written response:

Hey jerky   Hey,

Thanks for contacting me and I am always open to different points of view.  It strikes me odd someone of your intelligence would base a decision of "what they heard" about the largest real estate network with 161,000 + members and going strong. When I joined there was only 142 profiles.  Some call it cliquey, I call it community!

When I started on Active rain, I felt the same way..it felt cliquey and almost reminded me of high school.  But the truth was people were kind, shared thoughts and ideas and before you knew it, some of us actually became very good friends. Can't say blogging was a big hit in Daytona Beach then.  But its hitting big now...can't wait to show off my new upcoming listing, its a beauty and thanks to posting my ActiveRain blogs to my Facebook..one of my friends on Facebook has contacted me to sell their house...I sure can't wait to meet them face to face.  You are crazy smart to pay attention to what you heard.

My quality content was nothing before this network.  As a matter of fact its this network that helped me to write.  Many of us experienced pay it forward in a way that will never exist again.  I learned from the best...and many have gone to their corners of real estate but their words are here on this platform forever.  Why don't you read a few of these posts instead of listening to what you heard.

Lets hit on this Ambassador thing, ...I don't get paid by ActiveRain but I have always been an ambassador..I don't sell the product...I endorse it and use it and train it when needed.   At first I thought that is what I wanted to do was to sell the product...but for me personally I couldn't...I received some of the best coaching for FREE and I promised to pay it forward...and I do.  Should I disclose that?

Why not rethink what you are thinking.  If you want some help setting up your profile or have a question about the community or some good groups to join...email me.  And instead of paying attention to what you heard it might benefit you by taking a few minutes and reading what this community is all about.

Best Regards, Midori

I haven't been posting as frequently nothing against the network. They must have made the assumption I was mad at the network?  Sorry I hate to admit it.......

I've been experiencing the worst blog fog for months now.

I never understand why people insist on dissing ActiveRain especially those that never have tried it.

Midori,

I wonder about people in our business who throw stones.  I find that kindness, courtesy and a positive attitude bring energy and success to my business.  I couldn't live with myself or those I work with if I were consumed with "fixing" other people.

Many people have questioned me about Activerain, but more because they just don't "get" it... they're not critical.  Anyone who takes the time to criticize Activerain must have too much time on their hands.  Maybe if they participated in this network they'd have more business, like many of us have since we became raindrops.

Midori...I have attempted to get many of my real estate friends to join Activerain,,,they have been resistant. One of my featured blogs, talked about being busy while many of the local brokers were not, this of course was forwarded to Facebook...and read by these same Broker-friends, they are still resistant...I say screw it...you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them Blog.

Midori, it is a form of jealousy, that's all.  lol.  What type of people will confront someone who achieved a certain level and share their valuable knowledge with others?  Especially he/she has no idea what is going on on AR, very narrow minded.  I just joined AR last October, I have gained so much benefit from this forum, from knowledge, new friends, getting help from other members......and on and on.  Most important, it puts me on page 1 on Google and Yahoo search, and brought me business also.  Good for you, Midori.

Great response Midori! I am so thankful for the Activerain network. I have learned so much from the community. There is so much information contained here that people oare willing to share. It is one of my first resources when I am looking for an answer to a question or looking for new ideas.I am trying to get a handle on this social networking thing. I hope then that I can pay it forward.You. yourself have been a wealth of information and an inspiration! Keep on doing what you're doing! Thanks,

Midori -- good for you!  I've tried to invite people, encouraging them, and they write "I have a website, I don't need to blog"

Hmmm . . . the website is good.  So are business cards.  And so were ads in the Yellow Pages.

By this in INTERACTIVE and a community!  Having people in the community know about your services is a wonderful thing.  This was a property management outfit in the snow resort area of Oregon.  Hmmm . . . maybe they would have gained some exposure in our lovely community, and maybe they could have booked some nice rooms from our community, and maybe their rooms would be BOOKED for the upcoming Thanksgiving holidays . . . when I checked their wonderful website, there were a ton of vacancy for weekend. Hmmm . . . if I were a business (and I am) I wouldn't hesitate to take come good suggestions on a very nice community.

I agree . . . finding your writing "voice" is a process of blogging, blogging and more blogging!

I've begged, emailed, offered to help, etc., etc. to get some of the local agents to get involved on AR. So far, about 50 have their profiles (sort of) on and the blogging is almost nonexistent from anyone else in Haywood County. Absolutely amazing. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out this is a huge, valuable website with a gigantic 'encyclopedia' of information.

You certainly responded with eloquence and generosity to a thinly veiled insult as to your ethics. But hey, so what if you were paid (even though I understand that you are not). There's nothing wrong with promoting something that you know works with or without monetary compensation, especially since you have helped to shape the network into what it is today. And it shows good sense to utilize a resource that you do know gets results in conjunction with the development of your own authoritative blog sites. Good for you setting she/he straight.

Some people tend to trash things that they don't "get" and don't want to try.  A lot of it, I think, is based on fear of not being able to master some new technique.

When I worked as  service rep for Ma Bell in the late 70s, all of our customer records were on paper.  When we went to computerized records, (1979 -80 ish??) )some (not all) of the reps who had been on the job for many years hated the idea of having to learn how to use a computer.  They used to spend their lunch hours trying to convince those of us who were adapting to "join the cause" of demanding that we go back to paper records.

I had a client in 86 or 87 who insisted on using a Telex - didn't buy a fax until there was no one else in the world he could communicate with.  It goes on and on.

  • Internet - (just a fad)
  • Websites (Who on Earth would buy anything without going to a store?)
  • Cell Phones (I don't want to be that accessible to people)
  • PDA's (Nothing will ever replace the paper Daytimer)
  • BLOGs - (Who on Earth would read it?)
  • Facebook (It's stupid)
  • Twitter (140 characters - that's Stupider then Facebook)
  • You Tube (No one would watch a video on their computer)
  • Digital Cameras (Why would anyone not want 3x5 prints)
  • Smartphones (Small screens are stupider than Facebook and Twitter combined)
  • Text messaging (My customers would never do it)
  • Virtual tours, Video Tours, Sending photos from phones, webinars, podcasting - on and on and on
  • ActiveRain - well, you know..

It is unfortunate that many people do not understand the meaning of networking.  It is fine not to know everything and work learning from others, get ideas from our counterparts, that is the way it is suppose to be with each transaction and coming together to make our profession better daily.

Luckily personally I have only heard positive things about Active Rain, but then there are some who look at me like a deer in headlights when I talk about it.  I do not use it as much as I could and should but its always been a good resourse.

Your response was right on. I think it all comes down to the fact that it is much easier for people to dismiss something rather than give it a try. Also, people dont check facts usually they just listen to the first person that tells them something.

Oh for Heaven's sake - what business is it of hers what you do? You were much more gracious than I would have been.

I have learned A LOT here at AR and continue to learn -- I'm writing better blogs, I've figured out how to do a lot with Twitter & Facebook that I wouldn't otherwise be able to do, AND I can come here if I have a real estate question too! So I choose to spend my time here and that's nobody else's business!  I've encouraged fellow Realtors to jump in and they've ignored me. Their loss.

And whether Ambassadors are paid is between the Ambassadors and AR.

Why do some people assume the worse and think that we have lost our love for ActiveRain just because we may be in a "fog" or covered up with something else?  I don't post nearly as often I used to or need to but it has nothing with the community - someday soon I hope to be more consistent.

It kills me how people learn to love to blog here and then trash the network, or become a so-called expert with strong opinions again AR blogging!  Sure I have other blogs (also neglected right now), but this is where it all started and where I go every day to get inspired & learn, even if I don't leave a comment.

Wonderful response, Midori.  That is one of the most pleasant "put them in their place" retorts I've seen in awhile.  As Mr. Tom Burris mentioned above in his typical subtle manner, internet marketing is alive and well and living on AR.  But, you may just want to tell that agent to keep on doing what they are doing, even though they found you through the very means they seem to admonish.

Midori - You showed the true professional that you are with your response to that email.  I am always singing the praises of Active Rain in my office and even to my competitors but nobody gets it.  Even those that have tried have given up after a short period of time.  Tood bad because it's their loss and my gain.

All things considered, I think your response was fairly gracious and straightforward.

There is so much to be gained and given here in the Rain.

Midori... It's amazing that people want to discredit Active Rain and not even understand what we are all about.  Another amazing fact that I've seen is when people want to know what I'm doing, I take the time to show them, get them signed up and yet they claim they don't have time or just don't understand it. We can lead a horse to the water, but can't make the horse drink the water.

Brad.... When I first received an invite to Active Rain, I signed up and forgot about it too for about a year. They something led me back and I have been here ever since and not looking back. What a great platform we have.

Midori, I Loved you response, I think active rain is the real deal, They don't have their hand out to take but they extent their had out to give.  Sure as an agent would grow and get more involved in building their business they may want to use more of the pay services, but if is rare to find company willing to give first, even if they never receive anything back from you.  I am new to bloging and would love to have some advice on the best groups to join.  thanks for sharing.  I almost moved to Daytona but looks like I'm here in Washington State for a bit longer.

I think the reason for the negative attitude towards AR is because of what is happening in this comment stream. There is a "jump on the bandwagon" mentality that can occur on  AR posts sometimes.  Because of the point system, which I think is invaluable for newbie bloggers, there is that need to comment for the sake of commenting.

What happens sometimes is a slap-everyone-on-the-back-we're-all-great-mentality.  AR is a phenomenal tool for bloggers.  Those that choose to use the networking aspects of AR stick around and are some of it's biggest cheerleaders.  Those that want to engage in discussions and blogging in a different way tend to move on.  I don't think it is a greener pastures thing as much as a different pastures thing.  I think either should be just fine.

The fact that this post was featured reaffirms the "cheerleading" aspect of AR.  This dynamic on AR can become grating and irritating for some people.  Comment #40 sums up the problem in my opinion and why you got the email from the person who doesn't get AR.  Seriously...what is that comment about anyway?  People who aren't "rah rah AR is great" aren't welcome?

Like any forum, AR has pluses and minuses.  For some those minuses are too great to overcome and they don't participate in the network.  Some participate sporadically, like myself, and others are Ambassadors and are it's greatest cheerleaders.  All of these are totally okay.  Just like I believe some of the "anti-AR" sentiment is over the top, I also believe that the "pro-AR" sentiment can go to extremes as well.  We don't all have to do things the same way.

Good morning everyone

This post was not meant to be an AR rah rah session...as Melina put it..the point is

  • Why do agents try products or not try products based on what they heard?
  • Why do agents think they have the right to contact another via email for what they believe in right or wrong?

WHO CARES!

Why criticize something you have never tried?  FEAR?  Embarrassment?  Ignorance?

Activerain can be used in many ways...some prefer writing content vs. socializing and others prefer to socialize rather than post...to each his own.

The results are in...I know what I have gotten out of AR..ambassador or not...I will always talk about the best things AR has to offer...

  • EZ to use platform
  • Strong SEO power
  • Awesome way to get your message out
  • And a community that is helpful

I will always try to empower agents with tools and systems that work!

I do notice that those that move on sometimes have less than positive things to say about the network.  Makes me very sad.  AR has been good for me as a person, for my business and is the best source for  FREE real estate training. I think anyone who has participated or actively uses this network may very well say the same thing.

Melina I appreciate your response and you pointed out something...I would have as well..everyone is welcome to AR even if they do not want to socialize.

Good morning ma'am,

I am sorry for taking so long to respond comment to your post.  I think that folks who are quick to judge AR based on what they hear need to get involved and experience it before making a rash judgement.  And by being involved I am talking about giving it a good old college try for more than a month, more like 6-9 months then make a judgement.  BUT, they need to be active and NOT sit on the sidelines during that time.

Very well stated retort ma'am.

Midori:

People often criticize things they do not understand.  Any Realtor who does not get the fact they have to move on and learn to embrace new technologies is not going to be around for much longer.

I really like Rick's list of items that people have tried to resist over the years from the Internet, to fax machines to AR.

I think your gracious approach to this was terrific.  I am a fan of being nice. I think that works in the long run.  It certainly beats the alternative...

Midori -

It's sad that some folks lead a life of negativity... I wouldn't give them a minute of time.  Seriously, anyone who has been learned on AR, contributed to AR or reaped the rewards of blogging on AR knows the truth.

I teach real estate in Oklahoma. I have no problem sharing everything thatr works for me, Active Rain, Google ad words, Posterous, Twitter, etc. You can give them statistics like, I blog about short sales, and in the last month I have had 3 people call me after reading them and saying come list. They did say they are interviewing me, they already did. If I have 1 out of 20 that will not only be positive about it, but put it into practice, I feel that I have been successful.

They do it because it is easy to step on what you don't know. If they are struggling and frustrated they want to bring others down with them. Don't let it happen - move past them.

Midori I know your post was not meant that way, but the comment stream took it into that direction.  I think that is the crux of the problem.  Your post is very neutral and your response was respectful to the emailer.  I assume they emailed you because you are an Ambassador.  I'm not sure what disclosure they want since the badge is right there front and center...but that is a different issue.

In order to talk about how great AR is and that it has 160,000+ members there needs to be some acceptance that of the 160,000 members, not all think AR is the best thing since sliced bread.  They are welcome too and shouldn't be told they wouldn't fit in with the AR crowd anyway.  They shouldn't be told they are angry or negative for not thinking the way some people do.

Why is someone angry for not liking AR?  How does saying they are angry or negative make them feel welcome here?  Aren't some of these comments reinforcing the reason why they don't get AR?  It is my personal belief that you can support AR and the community without calling its dissenters unwelcome, angry, or negative.

Hi Midori!!  Sounds like you met up with an individual with some issues that they may need to take up with a counselor!!  Dust your coat off and move on!! AR is a wonderful place to be!!  All the best!!

I second Michelle's comment - and of course Missy is spot on with her

"They learn here...they move on...they act high and mighty."

It use to bother me - until I figured out that their opinion really didn't matter anyway.

Well I would say over 162,000 people love AR...so step aside 1 emailer who is probably negative about anything and everything....

Midori, great response. I'm always amazed with people who criticize but never bother to get more insides about the subject.

By the way how is Florida? Still very humid? I used to live in Fort Lauderdale.

Midori, it's easy for one to criticize as what they're really saying is that they wish they were experiencing your feelings of joy. Far too many just don't get it when it comes to blogging and view it as a complete waste of time.  Who's really crazy?

Active Rain certainly has proved to be  a valuable resource for blogging tips and real estate related information.  It has also proved to be a supportive community that helps one another.

Not sure why people form opinions without actually having all of the facts.  Heresay and gossip rarely contain much truth and its unfortunate that people sometimes buy into it.

Midori - I wonder if some people are fearful of the point system and just feel it would take too long to catch up on AR and be displayed on the front page search for their local area.  I dare this person to find another real estate networking system that can help with lead generation like AR.

Midori - sorry about chiming in here late...I would not diss it for the world even having an outside blog. Recently I was a the local association where they offered blogging for Realtors(r) and I knew who was giving the class. He mentioned that he did not care for Active Rain - he did not give a reason -I totally disagreed with him. The bad thing about this session was, the course should have been given more emphasis on AR than wordpress because most of the Realtors there did not even know how and what to blog about. Needless to say, after the session was over, I told the remaining Realtors there that Active Rain is the BEST place to start out.

In the critque sheet, I also make note that this course was very good but emphasis should have been given to Active Rain.

Midori - Great response... I agree with the pay it forward strategy.  When I make tech presentations, I include ActiveRain because my blogging strategy would have stopped after a month if I didn't have the information, resources and encouragement offered by other AR members.  Mark it down as "this guy doesn't have a clue."
