As some of you may know my Cairn Terrier, Rusty, past away this past April.  He was with us for 14 years.

valerie osterhoudt

We are now ready to adopt/rescue another Cairn Terrier and/or West Highland Terrier.  We are looking for two dogs.  We are open to older dogs as well as puppies. We are looking to give a dog in need a good home.

It has been a nightmare trying to find one to rescue/adopt.  I've been to Petfinders, but I've had no luck there.  Yes, there dogs for adoption, but since I live in a condo, there is no yard for them to run.  Plus, they want the yard fenced in.

I've had two Cairn Terriers in my life and both have had excellent homes and have lived their life to the fullest with ONE family.

If anyone knows of someone looking to find a good home for their Cairn or Westie.. please pass along my information.

Thank you in advance.

Valerie if I hear of one I will let you know, but I am not into dogs so the people I know don't usually share "doggie news" with me.

Valerie we hope two will find their way to your home. You'll be a good parent for sure. We have a black lab that we wouldn't trade for anything in this world.

Hi Valerie, I'm sorry for the loss of Rusty.  We've always had Westies and when we lost our male we were looking pretty soon for another companion for our female.  It's definitely not easy to find Westies or Cairns.  We finally found one through ttp://www.shihtzuandfurbabyrescue.com/index.html  It's been more than eight years now.  They take in all kinds of small breeds so you never know!  I'm not sure about transport.  Good luck to you!

Hi Valerie,

I'm sorry for your loss of Rusty.  My wife networks with lots of animal rescue groups.  Hopefully, she will come up with some contacts for you.  We'll keep you posted!

Carl & Ceil.. I just can't believe how HARD it is to adopt a dog today.  I have experience with this breed, and just adore them to pieces... only time will tell about how things work out.

Valerie, I sure will put the feelers out for you....of course, petfinder is a great resource, which you tried already.

Hi Valerie:

Sorry about you losing your Rusty.

I just know there's Cairn Terrier or Westie waiting for you.

It's true, rescues and shelters require a fenced yard to adopt out.  My rescue requires the same, but considering that you've successfully had them in your condo for years, I would consider making an exception.

Silvia.. Thanks for that lead.. I'll be sure to check it out.  Just hope there is a Cairn Terrier or Westie some where in New Enland for adoption.

Chris... That would be wonderful.  Trying to adopt a dog is so much harder than it used to be.  Probably makes some people change their minds even though they would make great homes for these animals.

Kristin.. Personally, Petfinders is a pain in the A--.  I would never recommend them to anyone.  They go by a script, and don't take in regard what you can offer a pet.

Toula.. That is why I don't like Petfinders and other groups like this.  As I mentioned to Kristin.. they follow set parameters.. not taking in regard other circumstances.  I've had Cairns.. they are fine on a lease.  We have a dog park in town where they can run.

You can find someone that has a yard for a dog, but might chain it up all the time.  Why not find a loving home, which might mean to think outside the box of the standard requirements?

We've in the past year and half adopted two large dogs and while even though we are on an acre we don't have a fence.  But frankly, I wouldn't let my dogs out without me being with them anyway.  They are family and we walk them every day.  I wish you the best of luck in finding new pups.

Tammy... That is exactly my thought.  I live in a condo where you can't let dogs run free.. then again, you shouldn't do that anyway.  I've always walked them, taken them to parks, and they love to go for rides.  They are FAMILY members.. so why I can't adopt one from Petfinders because I don't have a yard.. and don't have a yard that is fenced in... MAKES NO SENSE TO ME!!
