CCD – The New Health Scare

Apparently, over the last three years, more than one in three honey bee colonies have died nationwide, posing a serious risk to our natural food supply.

One cause of these losses is an alarming phenomenon called Colony Collapse Disorder, or “CCD.” When a hive experiences CCD, the honey bees mysteriously desert their hive and die. CCD symptoms have been reported by more than thirty-five states across the U.S. and in many other countries.

Researchers do not know exactly what causes CCD, but they believe there may be many factors contributing to the problem, including viruses, mites, chemical exposure and poor nutrition.

Wow, Mirela...no one less than Einstein! I have a friend who is an apiarist and she is worried too. I've had the opportunity to use her services in real estate to safely remove honey bees from the eaves of a listing. It is a fascinating process...I probably need to post some of the pics!

My daughter first told me about this issue. I thought she was kidding. I couldn't believe its ramifications. Have you heard of this before?

We take the honeybees for granted. If our pollution has killed the honeybees, what is it doing to us?

Mirela, It's a bit scary that the smallest creatures could possibly cause a catastrophic chain reaction...if it is any comfort to you regarding the collapse of the hive, My teen son assures me he intends to live in my basement till he's 30 or marries which ever comes first.

Very interesting! We have been toying with keeping bees for a couple of years! We'd like to give it a try!

I didn't know that, Mirela. I'm going to have to eat more Haagen Dazs to help out the honey bees. Whatever it takes.
