Daydreaming about getting some shut-eye?  According to sleep experts, follow these tips to make the most of your afternoon zzzzzz's:

7am to 8am---Wake up and vow to take a nap later.  Doing so might make it easier for you to get out of bed in the morning.

9:30am---Stop drinking all caffeinated beverages.  For the morning at least.  It takes about 7 hours for caffeine to leave your system, so cut yourself off now if you plan to sneak in a snooze during the most rewarding time of the day.

Noon---Scout a dark, quiet napping location.  Try to find one that comes as close as possible to simulating nighttime.  Make sure to pick a spot that gives you enough room to recline---it takes 25 percent longer to fall asleep when your body is upright.

1pm to 3pm---It's the best time to nap!  Your body temperature naturally dips midway through the day.  That's its way of saying, "Nap, please!".  Prep for one by drinking a cup of coffee or tea.  It may sound strange, but the caffeine won't kick in until after your sleep session (it takes about 30 minutes).

3:30pm--Wake up now and feel refreshed and ready to go, not groggy.  If your nap passes over the 30 minute mark, you're better off extending it to 80 minutes, the time it takes to get through a full sleep cycle.

Kristin

I wish I slept better. I am down to only 10 to 15 cups a coffee a day though.

Kristin,  It sounds like you are talking about a Siesta.  Since I love to work real estate referrals to and from Latin America, I immediately thought about this part of the culture.  And it is good for you.  A "Waashington Post" article says that those who nap have less risk of heart attacks (based on  studies in Greece -- February 13, 2007).  Thanks for a great post.

Wow! I did not know that. It usually does not take me too long to fall asleep whether I am prone or sitting upright. I do like my afternoon naps ☺☺☺
