I was recently plagiarized for the third time.  This is a great video about intellectual property rights.  Thanks Mike!

Via Mike Jaquish Cary, NC, Real Estate (KELLER WILLIAMS® Realty):
GREAT video!

Notice the parallels between the video and on line photo thieves' rationalizations.

"It was just there for the taking."

"I didn't see anyone."

"It was calling my name."

Is this the era and the generation that will destroy the value of intellectual property rights?

Until more people are more concerned about intellectual theft, it may well be.

Melina:

Good point to this video.  We all need to be aware of where we get our graphics.  Thanks

Melina:  I'd love to watch the video... but it's late here... and Mollie T is asleep.  She gets really grumpy if you wake her... so I'll be back tomorrow to watch the video.  BUT... being plagiarized three times... that's got to be frustrating.

What is the best way, in your opinion, to find out if you are being plagiarized ?  Any ideas... or is that in the video ?

Or... occasionally I have read posts that just SEEMED like they were probably plagiarized.  From the post, and from the alleged writer... I could just tell they were not capable of writing something like what they were putting their name on.  So... how can I check stuff like that ?

Melina, And what is stunning is that they have no shame, and even when someone stops them, they do not feel like thieves. This is bad, people refuse to be ashamed for as long as they are not going to face the cops.

Karen Anne,

When I have the same feeling that I do not expect this from the author, it is too good, or something, I just choose a phrase, copy and Google it. Works perfectly.

Melina:  It looks like you have a SPAM comment in # 5 above.  I suggest you DELETE it immediately, and also, obviously, do NOT click on any of those links.  They could lead to viruses, trojan horses or worse.

This is the third spam comment from this same person I have seen tonight.  I have reported it to AR.

Actually Plagiarism has been around for a long time.  This generation is just able to do it more easily in an era of decentralized media.

One of the most successful and impacting books ever written - a thick pamphlet really - was also one of the most bootlegged of all time.

It was wildly popular.  It was published in an era when most Americans could not read.  Those that could read it to others:  in their families, in their taverns...even in military formations.  Almost every American read or heard its message.

Most of the copies of the book were not printed under authorization from the author.  Printers all over the country just fired up their presses and sold it without sending any royalty to the author. That prevented him from doing with the stolen proceeds what he did with most of what he did receive:  donate the money to the cause.

The book?   Common Sense.

The author:  Thomas Paine.

The cause:  The American Revolution.

The message (paraphrase):  It is not reasonable for a continent to be ruled by an island.

Wow great video... I am off to Mike's post to comment too!

I am a big supporter of the Creative Commons License but  I certainly understand why artists don't want to share their work.

I thought no one would take the displayed artwork...  The juxtaposition with the bikes which are probably chained to the street light in the video... got to me even before people started running off with the artists work.

I have pretty much given up policing my content for plagiarism but when it bites me in the butt I get angry

Karen Ann,

Right now I am using Copyscape to screen my blogs.  It doesn't do all of them, and I rotate which ones I screen on there. It's a monthly fee.

Mike it was a great video and appropos for my current situation with a plagiarist.

Maureen I like the CC license too.  I have let people copy my work with a link back.  I just want to know where my work is.

Jon I find the excuses come flying out of their mouths.

Jim, yes plagiarism has been around forever.  I can see in that case not really caring because it was about a cause and you in fact would want distribution of the book to further the cause.

I sold your avatar on Craigslist in a package deal along with Elaine's content.  The buyer is going to be super pissed when they realize there are only like 4 posts.

Melina: Amazing isn't it! I had that happen to me actually quite often in the music business (back in the day)... I use to write arrangements for pep bands (high school / college)...

I try to take all my own photos for my blogs... I don't care if anyone uses them as long as they quote the source. Yet, even stating that, I found one for sale on a site!
