How does a newspaper cover an earthquake that no one feels?  That does pose a challenge.  Our state newspaper, the Arkansas Democrat Gazette on October 17, 2009 ran the following editorial.  I read it this morning while drinking coffe and loved it.  I loved the large letters that got smaller and smaller.  The humor was there and the earthquake got plenty of coverage.  I hope they don't mind that I scanned it and am letting you read it.

21 Comments on Arkansas had an earthquake! I didn't notice. But I noticed this clever writeup in our state newspaper.

I live about l5 miles from Quitman......in Cleburne County.  Read in another section of today's paper we in Cleburne will have a seismograph places stratically somewhere to check for further quakes.  I didn't feel a thing, but I have once, in Jonesboro, Ark. experienced one.  It's a funny feeling, strange not funny ha ha.

C-Tann, it is a very clever editorial and editorials are usually so sleep-inducing.

Cynthia, you're a lady who is making me like you a whole lot!!

Anita, didn't you like the way they wrote it?  Remember a few years ago when someone predicted the doomsday earthquake in Arkansas and we tied down our water heaters and took out earthquake insurance and the Day came and nothing happened.  Wonder what ever happened to that prediction fellow?  His credibility was shot.

Ah earthquakes, I've felt a few but never in The Natural State. The big one for me was the Loma Prieta October 17, 1989 or 20 years ago at 7.04 CST today. It occured during the warm up of the 3rd game of the World Series featuring the two San Francisco Bay Area teams the Oakland As and the S.F. Giants. It was 7.1 on the Richter scale and lasted 10 - 15 seconds. I was driving down El Camino Real in Sunnyvale, CA on the way home after work. I didn't feel it much in the car but I saw the utility lines swaying wildly and the traffic lights went bonkers. We didn't have much damage, some broken vases and bookcases down. Many were not so fortunate,

The strangest earthquake we felt was on the beach in Barbados 2 years ago November 29th. We could feel the tremor and I immediately looked over at the swimming pool and the water was rolling wildly. I knew it was a quake so we hurried off the beach for fear of a tsunami. The quake was 7.4 magnitude and struck at a depth of 90 miles in the North Atlantic about 140 miles away.

Then there was the M 6.2 quake that struck November 23, 1987, at 5:53 p.m., in the Mohave Desert. We were having dinner in Yucca Valley, CA when that jolt occured.

The point is, once you feel a quake of significent magnitude,  the when and where is burned into your memory. It's quite an experience.

Don, you have so many experiences, including earthquakes.  My daughter was in a pretty big on in San Francisco and she said it was scary.  They all exited the skyscrapers and went to the streets.  Thanks for sharing.

Barbara - I would absolutely love to live in a place that was so quiet, that it has to report an unfelt earthquake to have any news.  I also love the fine print at the bottom of the article. . .To me, it's things like this that remind me of the America we use to have and love!

You're lucky to live in such a delightful place:-)

Godmother,

When I was working with Mr Charles, I thought there was an earthquake at his house but it was just Mr Charles throwing a major tantrum over nothing.

Nutsy, PS -- I am back to playing hockey

Nutsy,

You'll be able to make a fortune one day when you write a book about all those odd things Mr. Charles does.  A temper trantrum over nothing!!  How cruel.

Just keep documenting....

Godmoma Ms Barbara

Barbara...being around all these Hot Springs that are supposed to be produced from plate movement, I wonder what catastrophic 2.95 quake will come next?

They have put a seismic receiver out at Lake Catherine State Park just east of town. I wonder how much that cost us to keep track of, well...much ado about nothing, just like the article :)

Cynthia, I like your style :)

Bill, I love your springs.  When we attend convention and stay at the old hotel Arlington, I always stick my fingers in that hot water across the street from the hotel. It amazes me that the water can be so hot.

Be sure to watch the video that Don put up.  It's short and vivid.  He made it and then ran.  LOL

Godmother,

Mr Charles is bashing me at another person's blog. Mr Charles is not the liberal mind he pretends to be. He is pigeon-holing me and my species. I quote:

Gary, I agree---squirrels seem to actually do more "physical" damage to homes than rats do---given the same number.  There is one particular one in Bellingham WA that will probably pop in here and try to defend himself---but don't pay any attention:)

Please help!

Nutsy, feeling like General Custard

Dear Nutsy,

You have your battle cut out for you.  That Mr. Charles is tougher than the Comanches ever were.  The biggest problem is he fights dirty too.  I don't know where he's bad-mouthing you so I can't be  as diligent as I'd like to.  Let's try to get an army of squirrels and be ready to attack.  We'll show that guy a thing or two.

Godmoma B, putting up a sign to sign up an army of Squirrels.
