My owner is a home inspector in San Diego. There are many beautiful ducks at the San Diego Zoo, and those that are in the open lagoons are free to come and go as they please since they are visitors to the Zoo and and not official residents.

Over in the Flamingo Lagoon and are a couple of ruddy ducks (Oxyura jamaicensis). If you can't find them there, walk about a hundred feet down towards the Tour Bus loading area, and you'll probably find them in the lagoon across from the tour busses. There are also a couple of these beautiful ducks in one of the enclosed lagoons over near Polar Bear plunge.

Northern ruddy duck

Northern ruddy duck

The ruddy duck occurs throughout most of North America. The males, above, are very easy to spot because of their distinctive blue bill. The females can easily be confused with female mallard ducks, of which there are plenty at the Zoo. The ruddy duck is a diving bird that can swim very well under water, eating the seeds and roots of aquatic plants, as well as aquatic insects and crustaceans.

The ruddy duck is not threatened in its native range, but its aggressiveness in interbreeding with some other ducks has created problems in Great Britain where it escaped, or was released, from private collections. Interbreeding with the endangered white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala) of southern Europe has resulted in calls to cull the ruddy duck from the feral populations there since it is not a species native to Europe.

Russel, I am so sorry that they are thinking of stifling the population of this beautiful duck! I just love his blue bill! I love your animal classroom!

Hey, Caren - They are only considering "stifling" the population over in Europe where the ruddy duck is not native, and only because it is interbreeding with the endangered and European native white-headed duck. I edited my post to make it clearer.

Interbreeding quite often creates a species that has the best characteristics of each species. That can be good or bad depending on what one wants to accomplish, but out in the wild, it's usually bad for the two species involved, as well as other species that might rely on them for food.

Here in Southern California, we're currently trying to stifle anything and everything that is not native, but there's a lot of opposition to getting rid of all of our beautiful eucalyptus trees. There's not much that is native to Southern California, and since everything grows in this moderate Mediterranean climate, we have a lot of non-native species -- both fauna and flora -- that are thriving here.

Hey, Jim - The males have the beautiful blue bills. Females are drab, boring, and uninteresting, which is why I never take pictures of them -- LOL. The only species where the woman wants to be the more beautiful is in humans. Hmmmm.

Russel,

What a beautiful duck! I love that you frequent the zoo to appreciate all the animals. And I love it even more that we get to see your pictures! Although I must say, Zoey the cool cat rivals most of the animals for best picture in all your posts.

Your friend in the Cosmic Cow Pie.
