Are we allowed to write sequel blogs about our local areas? With our country even through blogging being so interconnected nowadays it seems like the blogger is your local Johnny on the spot reporter for the inside scoop of what is going on in his or her backyard. Last year, about this time in October, I observed after visiting the State Fair of Texas, that you have to put that one definitely on your Bucket List of things to do. The event runs pretty long, this year from September 25th to October 18th. Our opening weekend was a little warm yet sunny, but then we seemed to enter monsoon season with the heavy rains and grey skies. The vendors at the Fair I am sure this year took a hit.

But then the football gods who somehow scheduled Texas-Oklahoma a week later than normal were blessed with outstanding weather. The State Fair grounds were built as a project coming out of the Depression era. It is not merely an amusement park, but much more. Museums, midways, livestock barns, petting zoos, wine tasting, Marine/Army/bagpipe players, ponds with swans, skyrides, amphitheaters, Big Tex, huge Ferris wheels, new automobiles, even corny dogs. The place is just amazing on so many acres. Hey, EVERYTHING is big in Texas. But watching it again this year I marveled at the people. That is the key to this place. It is just so darn relaxing. Yes the Dallas Area Rapid Transit train system faltered on the big overload day with the football game and the traffic that one day was a bear, but once inside you just really calm down. It is magical. Lots of fun and smiles and just take your time going around in discovery. It is SUCH a cool place!!! Some pix:

Gary - Somehow when I think about a State Fair, I think of Texas. . .It just seems that state would take the gauntlet and run with it to be among the best.  Your pictures pretty much verify that!

Gary - You know, I still have two tickets to go, but just have not made it down there. Each year I wait until the last minute before going. I knew this weekend would be packed with the UT - OU game, but still I waited. So, now I'm going to have to make a trip down there and have some of that friend food.

It must be awesome to attend a fair that lasts so long!  Ours (county fair) only lasts 3.5 days, one weekend.  I bet it's huge too, so you need all that time.  of course, everything is bigger in Texas.

Gary I am not surprised that Texas would have one of the best state fair, and from the pictures I think you are right.

I'm with Russell - now all I can think about is a corn dog - a favorite as a kid, and try to avoid at all cost as an adult! Thanks slot, Gary....  :)

Texans are all alike - - it's ALL about TEXAS!  :-)  I know because I am one - born in Texas!

Speaking of Texas vs OU - - the "Horns" did good!

Hi Gary, Once you have attended the Texas State Fair, there just is nothing anywhere else that could compare. Being in business there ,I was invited several years to attend opening night and would go several more times during the course of the run. I really enjoyed it and so far, have not found anything that even come close to the beauty of the grounds or the way this fair is organized and run. Simply nothing like it that I have found.

I was at the PA state fair as a kid and I remember it being the first time I ever tasted a Dr. Pepper!  I hadn't even heard of it before.  Lol @ Susie's remarks.  I've always had a thing for cowboys myself.  But big cowboys?  I'm picturing a young sulky Paul Newman in jeans and a  cowboy hat.  Just the right size cowboy.
