Brownstone Townhouses

New Yorkers lived in Townhouses during the 19th century.

19th Century Single Family Townhouses were made of Brownstone and Limestone.

The luxury apartment building was actually invented in New York in the late 19th century. In 1890 The Dakota was the first luxury apartment building in Manhattan. By 1930, 90% percent of Manhattanites lived in apartments.

To anyone who has ever lived in or visited NYC, this street view is a very familiar (and comforting) scene.

Hi Mitchell - I love these old brownstones! Beautiful and often artisic. The Dakota you mention is where John Lennon was living when he was shot - I did not know it was the first of it's kind.

Mitchell - the brownstones of New York are among the most beautiful. Of course there are those in Boston's Back Bay which are not too shabby. A stroll or drive down these types of tree-lined streets is a treat. I could live there!

Mitch, this reminds me a bit of my old block on East 83rd off Madison. We caledl it the Park East Poverty Pocket - it was the upper east sides most run down brownstone!

Hi Mitchell... When I lived in NYC, I loved just wondering about the stories behind different brownstones. They just always seemed to have a tale to tell from their past.

I grew up in New York City and like Brian said, "this street view is very familiar". Thanks for the bit of history to go with the scene.

Jeff, There are many historic districts in various NY neighborhoods. The building facades' original details must be preserved.

Hannah, Carrie's brownstone in the show is supposed to be on the Upper East Side but it is actually on Perry street in Greenwich Village.

Pat, LOL. Diversity! 83rd off Madison is a pretty nice neighborhood. You're either between 5th Avenue or Park Avenue. Not bad!

Steve, Many stories. My first apartment was in a brownstone that was originally the Gimbel's family (from the department store) townhouse.

Mitchell, I love the old Brownstones, they are SO unique. I didn't know the Dakota was the first, either...and I thought they shot SATC in the Upper East Side but gave a fictitious address....I had no idea it was in the Village.
