Poison oak provides beautiful fall color

Poison oak brings beautiful color to our northern California coastal range mountains. Who says California doesn't have changing foliage? Just a snap from my Blackberry today while out on a short hike.

--- Just another benefit of living in San Mateo County and the Silicon Valley!

They are beautiful and you are correct, do not touch

Hi Lottie ~ Don't you love that your phone can take such good pictures?! I bet it was a nice walk - and we'll take foliage anyway we can get it.

Lottie,

I didn't know that Poison Oak changed colors with the season.

Hi Charles -- you're right. I remember ears ago coming across a family cutting great armloads of stems, having no idea what they were holding.

Liz, our phones do take amazingly good snapshots. Yes our hike was grand--lots of colorful poison oak set off by the dark green of redwood forests. Now that you've had your first snow, have you turned on your heat yet?

Rich, poison oak is tricky; in winter it's bare (although still causes rashes), spring sees shiny amber-to-green leaves, summer fully developed green leaves, turning to yellow, ocher, orange and red. To make it worse, sometimes it's in bush form--like the picture here--and other times a vine, climbing up and around other plants.

Lottie,

That's quite a pretty collection of forbidden items. Great job with the phone. :)

Oh no!  Poison Oak is horrible, absolutely horrible!  I can't be anywhere around it.  I must admit, I've never seen it look so beautiful.

Carissa, you can well imagine my horror when I saw people cutting it by the armful! People's susceptibility varies widely, but almost everyone gets it to some degree--or will!

Being a city girl, I have no idea what some poison plants look like or where I would run into them. Guess that's one of the reasons that hiking and camping aren't on my list of things I want to do. Been there, done that.

Would rather take long walks in the neighborhood with my dogs and be safe on the sidewalk! Ha, ha, ha!

Well, Pacita, if you wander up to Joaquin Miller Park, or Redwood Regional Park, or Tilden, etc., you'll find 'em alive and well. Sidewalk walking in San Carlos has it's own hazards, like buckling pavement.
