Inspirationally, sometimes I am just moved beyond words. As I give important thought to my upcoming 100th post on ActiveRain, I have been inspired by other ActiveRain professionals,, the likes of Marlene Bridges, Celeste "Woo Hoo Sally " Cheesman , Jason Sardi, and many many others in our industry. It became crystal clear to me that  anyone with just an ounce of intelligence and understanding could easily recognise what the accomplished of this real estate industry bring that is unique to our clients. We bring a spirit and a passion and a knowledge base that have benefited consumers for over 100 years.

In our society today, we find ourselves  the easy targets of the news media and those that have no other outlet for their own misunderstandings and failings. With new business models appearing daily that threaten the very existence of that striving for excellence, we must be very diligent in our discourse to provide the ways and the means for the land holders of our great country to know and appreciate our value.

As REALTORS, we espouse that it is the fulfillment of the American Dream to own your own home. Professionals across the land ready themselves to fulfill that quest. Often interrupted by obstacles such a changing market or other business models that seek to curtail us being at the center of the transaction between homeowner and prospective buyers.

These purveyors of our own data can not and will not abide by our Code. With greed and self determination they bypass the very foundation of the institutions that paved the way for their existence. They seek to infiltrate our ranks by providing promises not often kept and seeming more like parasites than innovators. The context for their existence took many many decades of deliberate efforts and policy making by others now easily delivered with the advent of our new technologies that facilitate it.

The REALTOR Creed ( preamble of the code of ethics) starts by saying , "Under all is the Land . Upon its wise utilization and widely allocated ownership depend the survival and growth of our civilization".  This  is then foundation for everything that we all hold dear. When we speak about our respective markets, always remember that is not who we are but more about the conditions upon where we find ourselves working to fulfill that dream. Good markets or bad, as Trustees of the Land, we must constantly rededicate our selves to the excellence we strive for.

We must recognise the skills and aptitudes of others as we build our knowledge base to aspire to that excellence. In our REALTOR Oath, it speaks to the continuance of building our knowledge and competence. It is our charge to lead the way and not follow. To set the course and not be intimated by the imitators, for they know of no excellence , they seek no excellence, they protect nothing beyond their claim to have a right to participate.

It was the NOT the REALTORS that shunned them away. They would fail to see or embrace our Code, our Creed and our Oath , They would see it as nothing but hollow promises, meaningless words written by poets, not committed practitioners. Instead they demonstrate a contempt, a greed and an arrogance for any sort of reasonability. They justify their existence as "just because we can".

To my fellow professionals. In the days and months and years that will follow, be true to yourselves, your ideals and our lofty aspirations. There is great value in your commitment for excellence. I will quote here from a writing that I live my life by. In part is says "Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is, many people strive for high ideals. Be yourself".

As a REALTOR here in our social community of ActiveRain,let each of us make the further commitment to take the time to read and embrace those things that set us on this course. The Creed, the Code and the Oath.

In my years in leadership , I have administered the REALTOR OATH to hundreds and hundres of new real estate licensee that would come to embrace the ideals of being a REALTOR. In case you have forgotten the REALTOR Oath, Here is it for you. Read it , copy it, live it.

REALTOR Oath

I pledge myself
to protect the individual right of real estate ownership
and to widen the opportunity to enjoy it;

To be honorable in all my dealings;

To seek better to represent my clients
by building my knowledge and competence;

To act fairly towards all in the spirit
of the Golden Rule;

To serve my community, and through it
my country;

To observe the Realtors Code of Ethics
and conform my conduct to its lofty ideals.

William - Thank you so much for including me among the stellar list of those who inspire you.  I am honored because you are indeed in my opinion a man of honor.  Like you I am a REALTOR®.  We have chosen to abide by a code of ethics that goes beyond what is merely legal.  Not everyone who is licensed believes as you and I  that this is important and necessary.  That is not to say that those who disagree with us are not ethical, many are, some are not.  It is the few that are of concern...it only takes one bad apple...as the saying goes.  The one bad apple can give everyone in the real estate profession a black eye whether they are  licensed agents or REALTORs®. The difference is that as licensed agents the standard is only what is legal.  As REALTORs®, we are not only bound to adhere to legal guidelines, but also to ethical guidelines.  And, as you know, there are consequences for REALTORs® who cross the line of ethics.

Thank you for writing passionately about this issue.

Good Morning,

It was time to put the thoughts that I have had on the subject to words. it was time to remind each of us, that what we do have value beyond the compensations. You are very welcome. Someone told me yesterday that I should write this because I do feel so passionate. it won't be read or commented on like some of the more fun things we can do. But I decided, why not.

Did you know that the REALTOR Oath and the Preamble are not stand alone items on REALTOR.com

One actually has to search for them. How unfortunate when we need, now more than ever, to stand together united in a belief that what we do has value. We are as an industry being threatened again. I hear that there is to be another broadcast that will be doing another segment on the market, this time on why you don't need a REALTOR to buy or sell a home. Doesn't it make you wonder what is driving this? I suspect it is $$.

As always, I appreciate your support and inspiration.

William! I too believe that you do have a passionate way of writing and so appropriate for this time when we really all need to stand together instead of quibling over such minor trivial things. For me this is fun (who cares what others think???) you know why?  It is all the good in a professional and professionals have fun as well when portraying a "real" person...so WooHoo along with me William....BTW....Marlene is a pretty neat woman as well. OH geez. I almost forgot to thank you! Thank you for considering me one as well....I'm just me....really.  Also, there is not ifs ands or buts for me to stand with my head held high...with not a worry in the world...for not only abiding by our COE but going above and beyond the call of duty to think in the best interests of my client's. As for the ones that do not....well, there will always be one who cuts corners etc. Let's just hope the consumer sees that the good ones do outweigh the bad and no matter what industry there are good and bad...such is life.

Hey Sally. WOO HOO!  I have this failing of not being as clear as others. What I was referring to in my post were not REALTORS, but the real estate licensees that would never join organized real estate because their business model is counter to everything we have a passion for. The seek only to quantity the business. In fact they thrive because they don't embrace what we embrace. I just it was just not that clear. Still learning.

Thank you as always and I do have the special respect for you for that special uniqueness you bring both to your profession and to ActiveRain. You indeed are one special Lady!

Sincerely,
William

WOO HOO, two in a night. What time is it in Hawaii, I am just heading out for a 10:30 PM tanning appointment. Don't do the sun tan the natural way much anymore. Do the fake bake via a Mystic spray. Besides I happen to look good Orange, People think I must lay in the sun all day. I would if I could but I can't sit (or Lay ) still that long. Gotta go blogging don't you see. Writing beautiful words. My forte, it seems. If I don't get my listing tomorrow, it won't be such  beautiful words coming out of me. But if it sucks, I won't take it, I'll go shopping for client gifts instead. The women that called said she hopes the home will meet my standards,lol, I did actually chuckle, it is sort of a joke between some Realtor friends. I can only guess that she must know one of them.

Aloha, all the Best!

Sincerely,
William

Done already. It sprays, dries in an instant, I get dressed and back here in 20 minutes round trip. I haven't peeled in a lot of years. Too funy about hubby. If I had olive skin, with just a kiss of the sun, the color is fabulous. The only way I can get olive looking is by wearing the Olive Drab of military fatigues.Still have an Orange Face, LOL

January? What's January. I figured out that whatever it is it must be in Hawaii. CRS is in Feb in Hawaii, January ?

William- while I applaud your "vision", don't become a victim of hindsight- prepare for alternative offerings in real estate, HEAR the consumer, respond to what they require, and do not generalize in any way that might compromise a segment of the real estate community (specifics are fine).  It is the consumer that is engaging in different methods- out of respect for them, be fully prepared to loosen your grip on "tradition".  Just an opinion.  The Realtor code of Ethics has fallen on deaf ears in large numbers; let's not attribute the words to ALL Realtors.  That would be silly, and the consumer has discovered that many Realtors fall short of the expectations.

William- you're welcome.  That these are your passionate beliefs would make me want to hire you- there's no doubt that you hold firm to the ethics.  I wish that it were more widespread, but it's what will separate you from the crowd, don't you think?

Good Morning Laurie,

When I first read your original comments, I might have first made the assumption that you may have given up on your own ideals. I reviewed your web site and that did not seem to be the case. I spent a great deal of time reflecting your comments. Intermittently through a longer period, I formulated my response. Then I wondered if you felt victim to the failing of some others, when you spoke of the code having fallen on deaf ears. The more I thought about it, the more it made me wonder what events or situations made you feel that way.  What way, exactly, was I misunderstanding and was I about to just rant?

The Code of Ethics is specific but it is also open to much interpretation. Then I questioned if it was the broader definitions that make you feel that many have not embraced it

I wrote what would be the equivalent of 2 full pages in my comments back to you. As I read it back, I realized that the response would be good, if I had had a basis for writing it, but your comments were not that clear, especially If I was misinterpreting what you are saying.

So getting off my pedestal and fearing that I might sound a bit holier than thou, I backed away from addressing the issue. The interesting thing is that you came back to see my response. I guess we all want to know that when we write something that we want to feel that others take it in and respond to it. I notice that many in this social network do not respond. I think some at least must be " bogging for points" for ranking in their respective communities,lol, as opposed to developing a voice of communication which must include listening.

In then an attempt to put this issue in perspective that you have raised I would say this. I model my behavior and my actions after an ideal. Naive, in some respects, I hold my beliefs dear, because they are mine. They empower me to do what is right as opposed to what is expedient. I account to myself. I hold myself and my actions  accountable in many ways considered as the standard measure. Not to condemn or criticise, but as a means to create order in my life and convey that to others. I have great passion but control it so as not to be annoying but giving credence to it as a model. Am I perfect? No. Do I try to be , yes. Striving for high ideals is my both my inspiration and aspiration. Does it cause me consternation's, yes. Can I then keep it in perspective, Yes.

Does it then matter if I am correct? No. What matters is that I am guided in my actions honestly and that those actions allow me to be an example. I try to build, to be creative and be open minded. But being open minded does mean that I would embrace other examples just because they exist. Simply that I recognize that there are other ways of thinking about something. As a math honor student,( geek) and life member of its honor society, I mastered the equation with reason. I also discovered in rare circumstances there were others ways at arriving at a solution. Though I am resolute, I am flexible to at least listen as part of my speaking process. Beyond that I still hold to my ideals. As naive as they may appear to be.

I hope this makes sense to you, for the ability to communicate is essential and I also recognize that my other skills may be greater than my writing abilities.

Sally and William: you BOTH have wonderful writing skills---different, but very meaningful. I don't always agree with everything written here, but hey, who does?   I am sure I speak for most when I say KEEP IT COMING!

Many Thanks Kat for your insight. It is more than agreeing or disagreeing, it is the taking in of views and ideas and sharing them with out fear of rejection. One can earn that or it can just be a gift given freely. It matters little as long as one tries and gives their best effort. We can always learn as long as our ideas and opinions are fluid and subject to change based on new learned knowledge. Many thanks for weighing in. It is all about participating, right? And of course, keeping an open mind as we become the facilitators of change.

Bill- your response is wonderful.  Actually, I live in an area that is somewhat forgetful of the huge responsibility that selling a house entails, and that is the reaction that I had when reading your post- wonderful (except for the disdain of alternative business plans, but eclipsed by your enthusiasm).  My comment, to clarify, simply meant to convey that it's pretty sad (literally) that many agents  don't understand the full fiduciary concept, and as a result, the consumer thinks that the majority of us are equally lacking.  The post was fabulous, and if I failed to mention that (let me check)-yup- GREAT POST AND REMINDER!

You're such a sweetie, William. And so deep (in a good way).  Right you are about participating and keeping an open mind. I might add eyes and ears.  Now, as far as an open mouth, I need to keep mine shut sometimes.

   LOL    Okay--I am off to the pool now--sunscreen, bottle of water and Elizabeth Berg novel in hand.

Oh, and btw, Bill- I prefer to comment with thought on a few posts than thoughtlessly ransack them all- my favorites are like yours, where it's a bit of back and forth with thought provoking responses.  thanks!
