There have been many blogs on the $8,000 First-time home buyers tax credit.. but what about the $1,500 tax credit on energy saving products?

Did you know the average home is responsibe for twice the greenhouse gas emissions as the average car?  That the U.S. uses more than double the amount per capita of the United Kingdom when it comes to electricity?

To help reduce our consumption, for 2009 and 2010 years, there is a $1,500 tax credit when you purchase energy saving "Energy Star" products.  This amount is for both years.  If you use $900 in 2009, you only have $600 available for 2010.

Over the past 3 weeks I have purchase a new AC unit and a new water heater.. trying to do my part in conserving on electricity.

If you are looking to see what products qualify for this credit I found this site to be very helpful www.energystar.gov/taxcredits.  There also are various rebate programs offered by states and local utilities. To know more on these visit www.dsireusa.org to see what is available in your area.

Did you know that a programmable thermostat can save you roughly $180 a year on energy bills?  There are a lot of Do-It-Yourself things that can help save you money and you don't have to spend alot to get them done.  If you are handy you can checked out www.energystar.gov and click on DIY Guide?  Here you will find helpful advice.

If we all do a little to save, we will all save ALOT.

Laura.. You are welcome.  One thing I found is that you need to spend money to save money.  But isn't that the way things go in general.  I hope these websites help you out.

Darn it, I bought all new kitchen appliances, energy efficient, of course, in 2008. I wonder if my new plasma TV would qualify? It uses less energy than the LCDs.

Hi Valerie, how appropriateas it appears that we will be needing a new clothes dryer. But more importantly, it's a good item to note for new buyers, that may well need to buy something new. Thanks for sharing.

Elizabeth.. Thanks for the laugh.  No, I don't think a plasma tv would qualify... good thought thou.  How about a new water heater?  New AC unit?

I just had to clients decide to replace windows on the homes they have purchased to take advantage of this energy tax credit. I  know they will save much more than that in utility bills.

Ed.. Maybe you can get a new washer and dryer.. and with the credit, it might be like getting one free.  Just a thought.

Laura... You are absolutely right.. they will save more, and they will also increase the value of their home at the same time.

I'm checking into windows too.. funny you mentioned that.

CL & P offers an Energy Audit.  It cost $75.00 this past summer but they came out to the house, went through it top to bottom, found places in the house that were not sealed and gave us a large number of new light bulbs.  Well worth every penny.
