In 1953, Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. and her four children inherited a large piece of property that is now know as the Roosevelt Natural Area. The Roosevelts developed a plan for a town that would preseve the natural beauty of the area, Pine Knoll Shores. 

Beacon's Reach development began in 1978 on a couple hundred acres, just to the west of the Roosevelt Natural Area.  Sticking with the plan developed by the Roosevelts, Condos were constructed along landscaped trails and surrounded by Live Oak trees, saving as much of the natural maritime forest as possible.
