Brick Victorian building against a bright blue sky in Boston's Back BayYesterday we had early snow - preceded by pouring rain.  But what a difference a day makes! It was a  beautiful blue sky autumn day.

Good thing too - I had a tour scheduled for the Back Bay in Boston this afternoon. It's a park-and-walk kind of place so bad weather would have nixed our tour.  Instead, it was a glorious day - no need for a jacket - and the perfect weather to soak in this beautiful neighborhood.

Elizabeth, my parents and my wife are from Massachusetts and I lived there many years.  Yes, autumn and Indian summer are without compare.  And the uncertainty of the weather is for certain.  But, snow?  I've been in Florida many years now.  Snow?????????

Hi Lloyd ~ No kidding, huh?  I was floored when I went to the front of my office and spotted the snow. Prior to that it had been a really good Fall - sometimes we seem to skip fall and / or spring. Snow is just a distant memory for you? Must be nice!

Hi Carrie-Lynn ~ I was really watching that weather forecast - it would have been miserable if the weather was anything like yesterday's.

Love the Mark Twain quote, Elizabeth.  It must be a relief to get some relief from that early winter.

Liz, growing up in Hawaii, I now appreciate changes in weather like you describe in New England...year-round weather can get quite boring after so many years! :)

Liz  Having lived in Sherborn I certainly agree, but it is equally true in Northern Virginia

It looks like beautiful weather, and the timing was right for your tour. Hadn't heard that Mark Twain quote, but that sounds about right. Its the same here in Texas. Just wait a few minutes and it will change (except in the summer... sure can be hot here).

Hi Jane ~ I had faith that we would still have more fall - pretty demoralizing to think we would have winter from October through April!

Hi Leilani ~ Never having lived any other way I still am of the mind that if I got to the land of perfect weather (San Francisco comes to mind as my definition of close to perfect) I wouldn't need seasons. Winter - a nice time to visit but I wouldn't want to live there!

Hi Karen ~ I found the Mark Twain qoute in a round about way searching for the "if you don't like the weather - wait a few minutes." I found a funny post that listed about 20 cities or states that's been said about. I guess unpredictability weather-wise keeps us on our toes!

Hi John ~ We're on the same wave length with weather quotes!  The Mark Twain quote came from a speech he gave about New England weather - there were a lot of gems in it.

Hi Elizabeth, Yesterday you had snow and the next day not a cloud in the sky. What a contrast! This is a stunning picture of a beautiful old historic building. Imagine the stories that it could tell.

Liz - what a gorgeous Boston autumn day. I know exactly where that building is. Makes me a littel homesick, but I'm more than happy to hear about snow remotely. LOL

Hi Liz, I know I'm a bit late to your post, but as I was going through your blog, I couldn't help but notice the picture.  I just came back from an Architectural Styles class and this picture had me testing my new found knowledge.  :)  It's an awesome building!

Hi Hannah  ~ I miss Fall! It's gotten a bit chillier. Really it's been a great Fall - and since it's one of my favorite seasons I'm delighted.

Hi Joe ~ Isn't it perfect? The whole speech is great - the site I found had the transcript from a contemporary newspaper.

Hi Gabrielle ~ Some days the weather changes can give you whiplash. It truly was the perfect day for that tour.

Hi Sandy ~ I love blue sky days for taking pictures. I had to restrain myself while we were walking around - which wasn't easy.

Hi Jeff ~ You really scored weather-wise! I think your weather is perfect - days like this one all the time.  The Back Bay architecture sure is memorable isn't it? Such a treat to walk around.

Hi Kathleen ~ You really have to pay attention to the weather forecast in the morning - can't put any clothes away at this time of year.

Hi Chanda ~ I love those classes.  I took a walking tour of architectural styles in Cambridge this summer and probably could (will!) do a dozen posts from it. The Back Bay architecture is exquisite - I resolved to go back *soon*.

Liz,

I know what you mean. The October we experienced this year in Red Lodge, with regards to the weather, seemed to vary quite often from one day to another.   Nice quote from Mark Twain!   :)
