At the opening of every Troop meeting the Boys Scouts recite the Boy Scout Oath and Law. This is their Code of Ethics. This is what every Scout learns and what we as leaders hope they live by. The Code of Ethics post I recently submitted got me to thinking ... if we as REALTORS (heck, we as people!) would take a cue from this simple Law we could throw out the COE and this business (and the world) would be a much easier place to function in. So, for your consideration ...

= The REALTOR Law =

A REALTOR is ...

TRUSTWORTHY
A REALTOR tells the truth and keeps his promises.

LOYAL
A REALTOR is true to his clients, family, friends, and nation.

HELPFUL
A REALTOR is concerned about other people. He does things willingly for others to the best of his ability.

FRIENDLY
A REALTOR is a friend to all. He seeks to understand others. (Okay, there may be some exceptions to this one!)

COURTEOUS
A REALTOR is polite to everyone regardless of age or position. He knows good manners make it easier for people to get along together. (You never know when Billy Bob is going to pull out a sack of cash from his overalls to make the earnest money deposit!)

KIND
A REALTOR understands there is strength in being gentle. He treats others as he wants to be treated. (But he is not a doormat and turn the other cheek only works once!)

OBEDIENT
A REALTOR obeys the laws of his community and country, and profession. If he thinks these rules and laws are unfair, he tries to have them changed in an orderly manner rather than disobey them.

CHEERFUL
A REALTOR looks for the bright side of things. He cheerfully does tasks that come his way. He tries to make others happy. (Yes, there's always a bright side ... even if it's the sunlight streaming through the door you're exiting after seeing what the prior owner did to the house before the bank took it back!)

THRIFTY
A REALTOR saves for unforeseen needs. (And shifts in the market!) He protects and conserves natural resources. He carefully uses time and property.

BRAVE
A REALTOR can face danger even if he is afraid. He has the courage to stand for what he thinks is right even if others laugh at or threaten him. (And let's face it ... telling a seller his property's worth $80k less than he paid for it can be scary sometimes!)

CLEAN
A REALTOR keeps his body and mind fit and clean. He associates with those who believe in living by these same ideals. He helps keep his community clean.

REVERENT
A REALTOR shows respect to those who have earned it.

Okay, some of this is a bit idealistic. I'll be the first to admit that I've broken a few of these myself ... Cheerful tires me out and I've been having a hard time finding people that earn my respect lately but taken as a whole, the concept is good, right?

Jeez, at the very least, it's easier to memorize and recite these 12 points than it is to remember everything in the pages and pages of the COE!

Thanks for bearing with me on this ... I promise to let this issue go now. At least until the next time I get screwed by a fellow REALTOR.

15 Comments on We Could All Learn From the Boy Scouts (or: Ethics Revisited)

Very interesting post, thank you for your hard work and dedication for posting, keep it up my friend!!

I was a boy scout and agree that it would be a lot nicer world if everyone had standards like the boy scouts.

You are so correct. With the character deficiencies that exist today this would be a great COE!

True it would be a better world for us to live in if 10% of the people truly followed the Boy Scout Oath.

It's true for most of us! I am on the eagle scout committee for troop 187 in Colorado.

I loved the post!  What a great world it would be if some of us thought about the 12 before walking through their front doors.  It is also a reminder to me that I should do the same, because like you, I have also broken a few, and yes, this from a former Boy Scout Leader who should know better.  Thank you

Thanks to all who commented.  I've been spending a lot of time with the Scouts over the last few months and watching my son (as well as the 5 other boys I've lead for the last 6 years) grow and learn what it is to be a man has really made me look at life in a new light - I've been relating the principles of Scouting to what I see in this business and I get more jaded every day.

I like the post but using the Boy Scouts as an example after hearing the news that 1 or 3 leaders were charged with messing with the boys is not good example right now.  Not sure how wide spread it is but it was a special on the Boy Scouts of America and they didn't come out smelling like a rose.  By no means.

Unfortunately there is evil everywhere we go in this world.  Evil people will always be evil and sadly there are those who will be wolves in sheep's clothing and take advantage whenever and wherever they can.

The principles outlined still stand true.

James,

Nice job and you can continue to carry this torch.....until we learn to trat one another in out industry a bit better.

I like it ! If we all tried to remember the lessons we learned as children, we would all be better off.  When - after the Boy Scouts - did we learn to break those simple rules.

Rosemary - I understand your concern, but hope you can forgive the organization for the misdeeds of a few individuals.  There are, unfortunately, a few bad apples in every barrel.  Our children need to be protected in organizations like the Scouts, in church and in schools - but none of those organizations are flawed merely because an individual violates their position of trust.

Mike:  Too true.  It's been way to long.  I've had a few ideas but I guess I haven't been inspired.  Thanks for checking in and keeping me on my toes!

Dan:  There is so much unethical behavior out there it's maddening.  I think it's worse now than in the last market.

Ted:  Good question.  In my opinion, most ethics is common sense.  I guess there's a shortage of that too.
