The 2009 Columbia SC Fair Food Report

I was glancing through The State this past week, knowing The State Fair was coming to town, and an article about "fair food" caught my eye.  The State Fair is back, and now Columbia and Lexington county residents can indulge their taste buds with delicacies that you might only find here, and can worry about fat grams and cholesterol the other 50 weeks of the year!  The article listed some of the good food that is bad for you and I thought some of them would be worth some extra press.

These of course aren't all the food options you will find, but these are a great start!  One of my favorites has always been the elephant ear, which made the is this year !  Check out all the traditional foods here !

Sweet Piggy is the name given to chocolate-covered bacon. It's new to our State Fair this year, but it's been showing up in fairgrounds around the country. It starts with a piece of cooked bacon, which is dipped into melted milk chocolate, refrigerated until it hardens then topped with a few sprinkles of powdered sugar.

Hot and Fresh Mini Donuts, a long-time favorite, these sugar-and cinnamon-coated doughnuts come in a bag of 28. You can watch them being cooked in a conveyor belt before the sugary coating is added.

This is the third year for Deep-fried Pepsi based dough.

Corn-nana is also new this year, a battered and deep fried banana on a stick, covered in chocolate. It's eaten like a corn dog, with the same batter as Giant Corn Dogs stand.

Deep-fried candy and cookies, vendor Jeremy Orme fries everything from Milky Way candy bars and Oreo cookies to cookie dough. His best-sellers are the fried Oreos, cookie dough, and Snickers.

Cherry Bombs are cherries covered with chocolate, refrigerated and then covered in light, sweet batter before they are fried.

Elephant ears are fried dough that you can cover with everything from powdered sugar and cinnamon to fruit toppings.

Corn dogs along with elephant ears are the most popular food choices at the fair. A hot dog (or two or three) on a stick dipped in batter and deep fried to a crispy golden brown.

I agree with Jeff... yikes for the calorie content and as for chocolate covered bacon... that is simply mouth watering!  :-)  Thanks for the reminder to get in shape every year for our San Diego County Fair!
