My owner is a Realtor with Century 21 Award in San Diego.Delay pulling the plug on Grandma, or anyone else, so that you can sit down with them and explore their beautiful memories of life. Even explore their not-so-beautiful memories because they just might be "teachable moments."

My marketing guru has a huge list of sayings that his Grandmother always used, and he has personal stories galore that he has typed over the 43 years since his grandmother adopted him. Those stories allow him to share something personal, to expose himself, to break the ice with anyone he comes into contact with, which, I believe, is what leads to his success. It makes him a person instead of a robot.

Memories at the beach. My grandmother died about five years ago. Yep. She died. She didn't pass on, she didn't kick the bucket, she didn't go to a better place, and I didn't lose her. She died. How I wish that my mom, my brother, or I had sat down with her during her life and explored her memories -- and written them down -- instead of just making fun of her antics as she got older and lost those memories to the ravages of old age.

This works for anyone in your family. If your child comes home from school with a story, write it down or record it for posterity. It just might bring back happy memories forty or fifty years from now.

Hey, Jim. You are so right about how important it is to find out other people's stories and I completely understand that making that personal connection is very important. Maria tells me that I can connect with anyone. Thanks for sharing, Jim

My dad just celebrated his 80th B'day.  I never get tired of hearing his childhood stories (even though he tells them to me over and over again, and then he asks; "have I told you this story" and I politely say no, tell me :)

Hi Jim ~ I so regret that we didn't write down my grandmother's stories. There were family tales that went back to the 1700s.  But I was a teenager, otherwise engaged, and my parents had heard the stories sooo many times that it didn't seem necessary. None of us have the memory that my grandmother did and now most of those stories are gone.  I keep thinking that when I finally buy that video camera this is one of the things I want to do with my parents.

My husband's grandma is the only one I have left and the only one I am close to.  She has some great stories.  But, my mother-in-law is actually really good with these stories.  I'm going to need to get some recorded for posterity's sake.

This is a great idea.  Too many times you realize too late that you can't remember things accurately if at all.  I know I wish I had more knowledge of my deceased family from years ago.

Somehow when I was in high school I got the urge to do a family tree, and listened to grandparents on both sides plus one great-grandmother. The older I get the more I appreciate having that information now!

I wish I had this advice years ago before my father-in-law died at the young age of 52.  I now realize how much our daughter has missed by not knowing more about her Grandpa.

Jim, great point!  Now is too late, I say that because you always think that there will be more time, but time runs out before you know it!  Great post!

Great post, Jim.  I regret that I wasn't able to know my paternal grandfather, as I'm sure he would have had some good stories.  There was  a language barrier, as he didn't speak much English-... but still - an opportunity missed.

Jim,

Really great advice. I think everyone should take the time to sit and go through memories with loved ones that don't have much time left with us. You never know what you'll learn or what they want to share. Thanks for sharing.

Your friend in the Cosmic Cow Pie.

Jim, how true, when they are gone, so is the knowledge we let them die with. And the wisdom. I have no grandparents left, but I did take the time to ask as much as I could, I was young.

Great post!

Hey, Jim - Obviously Maria is right since you connected with her! LOL

Hey, Melina - Hopefully you are recording them in some form or fashion.

Hey, Liz - Many digital cameras and cell phones can record both audio and video, so don't wait until you get a big videocamera.

Hey, Heather - I'd be willing to bet that some of them would make great stories.

Hey, Debra - You should see the huge file that my marketing guru has about his family. I wish my family had taken such an interest.

Hey, Shoshana - I think my family tree is coming to an end since neither me nor my brother has any children.

Hey, Irene - Death can happen at any time, so it's important to write things down as they occur.

Hey, Tony and Darcy - Too many people never realize that time for each of us comes to an end, sometimes sooner than we'd like.

Hey, Rick - I had not thought about language barriers. I bet that happens more often than we realize.

Hey, Carra - Don't even wait until they don't have much time left with us because we can't actually predict how much time anyone has left on this Earth.

Hey, Andrea - Too bad our society does not treat its elders like so many Third World countries. We could learn a lot if we weren't so arrogant sometimes.
