From our recent visit to the Art Institute of Chicago.  I thought I'd share some of my favourites from the 3rd floor of the new wing.

(Left) Lyonel Feininger, 1871-1956
Carnival in Arcueil, 1911.

I love the colours and the motion... the surreal vista, with the aquaduct and curious yellow row homes... What a fun scene.

right: Mrs. Elvis admiring a colourful painting.  She's very bit as much of a piece of art, as

the canvas she's viewing.

Left
Pierre Bonnard
1867-1947

Earthly Paradise, 1916-1920

Muted pastels, sleepy, dreamy... unabashed nakedness, ahh... such is the life...

Henri Matisse
1869 - 1954

Interior at Nice 1919

A little snapshot in the time of a life... no?

Henri Matisse
1869 - 1954

Seated Nude 1925-1929

Strong, impactful... beautiful...

Y'all know this one.

Pablo Picasso
1881 - 1973

Mother and Child 1921

It really is different seeing it in person.

Alan - Thanks for sharing.  It's been a while since I have been there.  You reminded me I need to take a long weekend and visit Chicago.

Alan...

I love the impressionists of the Matisse era. My favorite museum ids the Carnegie in Pittsburgh, but the High Museum here in Atlanta also has a wonderful collection!

Alan...We don't get a lot of culture in the sticks of New Hampshire, luckily we can get to Montreal & Boston with in two hours and go to both often. We saw a Matisse exhibit in Canada this past spring...and my wife works with water color and oil when time permits.

I love art museums.  Actually I like all museums.  They are ususally quiet and not crowded.  This blog is also more enjoyable than the one full of lies about you-know-what a few days ago.

Bob, hopefully I gave you a few minute glimpse of the Windy City

Richard - I love Matisse, too... I've never been to the Carnegie....

Steve - you get "year round" beauty in New Hampshire... no sympathy here.

Barbara - why whatever are you talkin' about?

Thanks for taking me on a visit to the museum.  I was in Chicago twice for conferences and did not get to see enough because of all those darn sessions.  Maybe a visit for sightseeing is in order someday.

you're welcome Paddy.  Chicago may require more than an afternoon full of sightseeing.  You could spend an entire day at the art institute... were were only in the new wing for 2 hours.

Caren, I love that one too.

Alan:

I love Picasso and have tried to copy his style. This is much more difficult than you would imagine.  He was a genius.

Lovely paintings, all.  And that Matisse...
