Future of West Windsor Transit Village Appears Uncertain

At a joint meeting of the West Windsor Council and Planning Board on June 4, Hillier Architecture, the firm hired by the Township to plan a transit village at the Princeton Junction Train Station, said it is considering resigning from the planning process because of the increasingly contentious political climate in West Windsor.

The May 8 election produced a new council majority of Councilmen Charles Morgan and William Anklowitz and Councilman-elect George Borek. The winning slate made their opposition to Hillier's plan for 1,000 residential units front and center in their campaign, and its voters responded. The team won all but three voting districts in West Windsor. Hillier says the apparent dwindling support for the project among residents and changing tide on Council are reasons why they now may be the wrong firm to continue on with the project.

At the June 4 meeting, Hillier did attempt to respond to resident concerns about the high volume of housing by presenting revised plans that include options for 250, 500 and 750 units. Even so, the fate of the project and the firm's involvement in it remains to be seen. Township officials recently announced that they have postponed the June 18 joint meeting with the planning board and Hillier to sometime in July when the new Council takes seat.
