door hanger that says no teens allowedEffective October 19, 2009, unsupervised minors are no longer permitted in the MacArthur Center Mall in Downtown Norfolk after 5pm.

Yes, ID's will be checked and extra security is on hand to enforce the new regulation.  Teens found in the mall unsupervised after 5pm will be escorted to their "accompanying adult" or escorted out of the mall.

According to mall officials, the new rule is to help keep shoppers safe and kids out of trouble.  In recent years, the number of minors "hanging out" in the mall has grown.

Some of the businesses are not happy about the new rule.  Both Nordstrom and Dillards said they will continue to allow teenagers to shop in their stores after 5pm.

I have seen the malls go from the whole indoor idea to the new open air concept.  It's more social but at the same time discourages "hanging out" just by virtue of its design.

I have a hard time thinking it's ok to tell one group of people they aren't allowed in the mall except under certain conditions...

So now where are suppose to go? I'm sure the mall will see revenue drop. If they were causing trouble that is one thing, but if they are doing what teens do and walking around not bother anyone than why do they all have to be punished. I grew up in a rural area. The mall was one of the only place you could hang out.

So does this mean that MacArthur Center will be attempting to change their status from a 'B' mall to an 'A' mall? I'm not sure if they have the crowd to attract stores like Gucci, Juicy Couture, or Burberry. I will say that in order to attract those stores, the mall would have to re-image itself, but who's to say that they will?   MMMMM, what's to happen to our mall???  Great post ma'am!!
