Before Active Rain and Now- A Gift I Get To Live Each and Every Day

Before Active Rain and Now....Hmmmmm. What WAS life really like before and how IS it so different now? After all I have not been one where Active Rain catapulted me into social media mainstream. Nor has It made me my local community rock star, a social media whiz or even a prolific writer even though journaling has been a part of me for ions. Nope that has not been the case with me. My journey from before to now has been a different journey.

Gift of Active RainBefore Active Rain I knew without a doubt that real estate was very local and for the most part that is true. Laws, forms, customs, the realities of listing and selling real estate in my little part of the world called Annapolis are truly unique for me. Yet through Active Rain I have learned that real estate, though very local, is also universal. The concerns, challenges, and even the triumphs are really the same from coast to coast. We may solve them differently according to our locale but we all have them no matter where we live and do business.

Before Active Rain my world of sharing real estate challenges and triumphs was a few close friends in the business. Yet when all was said and done and the sun went down we were still competitors working the same market. But now because of Active Rain I read stories from across the country of others who had a challenge or triumph similar to mine. And then amazingly I read comments where others stepped up and squelched that challenge or truly applauded that triumph. Holy cow. Here was a world where competitiveness was put aside and in its place compassion and sharing took its place.

Before Active Rain I would never have believed with such intensity much less known the true importance of all aspects of social media, from blogging to SEO to becoming an area expert. Oh I am sure I would have heard and read about it and been curious for sure. But now because of Active Rain I am learning and growing each day. My eyes have been opened to really looking at where I live, of seeing it like a child full of wonderment and joy. What once was the every day has become the 'Oh Wow, is that cool or what!' It has made me appreciate at a deeper level this place called home where I live and work.

Before Active Rain my world was more narrow than I ever imagined. Since Active Rain my world has expanded beyond my wildest dreams. How blessed to have found a network of 'friends' who share their worlds, their souls, their triumphs and challenges and most of all their knowledge. Their knowledge of dealings in real estate and of growing with social media.

Looking back I can see my journey of Before to Now has been, quite frankly, slower than many here on the Rain. A slow but steady journey filled with learning and implementing of social media skills and knowledge. But it has also been a journey of incredible growth, an expansion of my thinking, and an awakening of knowledge that will get me there one step at a time.

Before Active Rain and Now has, on all accounts, been a gift I get to live each and every day. A gift from Margaret Woda, a dear friend and colleague who at the time could have never known how special a gift she was giving me. A gift of community, of brothers and sisters, friends old and new, of neighbors near and far sharing the sweetness of their triumphs and the battle scars of their challenges in this world we work in called real estate.

The NOW of Active Rain has become a window to an amazing world of people

brought my way through the simple click of my mouse.

That is a wonderful testimony to your before....and what I'd hoped to see....to clarify the difference between the 'before' and the after.

I thank Margaret for showing you the way here...I remember that day she put up an announcement to introduce you. I thank you for your contribution you've made here and my journey has been about the same. A slow gradual process. Mine most likely because I'd never in my life heard of blogggin until early 2007. YUP ...what a journey!

Sally- 2007 was my time of awakening too though I was slower in getting the sleep out of my eyes than you LOL. Yes, It has truly been a slow yet steady process but that is the magic here. No matter how slow we are it still works its miracles for each of us.

Hi Martha, Please tell Margaget Woda hello for me and Congratulations on her anniversary. She is remarkable. This post certainly expressed the gift of ActiveRain in that it keeps on giving. But ActiveRain is not an entity, it you and me and all the others. It is because of people like you that make ActiveRain what it is and why it keeps giving and growing. We are already the largest network site but I suspect one day our growth will topple 3 or 4 times what it is today. Thanks for sharing your story and thanks to Margaret for making the Rain better with you in it.

Hi Martha ~ Love your post. You hit on one of the things I appreciate most about AR too - the fact that you have friends in real estate who aren't competitors in your market. That is worth its weight in gold!

Congrats on your win in the contest.

Margaret - a well deserved win. What a great story and testimonial to your personal journey and to AR. I always enjoy your writing, even when I don't comment, and it has been fun watching your writing grow since you have been here. Your perspective and thinking is ALWAYS worth reading.

Hi Martha - I had been planning to enter this contest with my own post, but got distracted from it before it was over.  After reading your post and the other winners, I can see that it has all been said, and probably better than I would have anyway.  I enjoyed your post a lot, Martha, as I usually enjoy reading yours.

Hi Martha - Congratulations on your win. Well deserved, from what I read. Isn't it remarkable how blessed we are by the associations and frinedships we have formed here?

Oh, a question: at the bottom of the picture, it says a gift of two Margarets...I know that the lady on your right is Margaret Woda - might the lady on your left be Margaret Rome?

Denise- Yes our friends in AR are very special and the lack of competitiveness makes it even better. Even though Margaret Woda is right in my office I truly believe the friendship we have forged from AR has made a huge difference in our business relationship and our personal one as well.

Jeff- Well thank you. Your compliment means a lot to me. Like you I have admired your writings from afar as well. :0)

Susan- Thank you so much. I am sure you would have put your own special twist to the contest if time had allowed.

William- Yes that is Margaret Rome. Margaret Woda and I had gone to one of Margaret Romes book signings in Baltimore earlier this year. And yes we are blessed....many times over.

You know Martha- what you stated about getting to share challenges and successes with people who truly understand, yet are not competition in your market place has got to be my favorite thing about this place.  It's a wonderful world that comes into our lives and we reach into the lives of others.
