You or someone that you know may have children and be interested in the effect that moving has on them.  An article in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that children whose families move frequently are more likely to experience behavioral problems.

There is no denying that moving up is a positive experience for most adults, but children see it differently.  A family move disrupts the routine relationships and attachments that define a child's world.  Almost everything familiar outside the family is lost.  Parents can avoid a lot of stress --- for themselves and their children --- by following some simple guidelines:

Let youngsters know as early as possible.  How soon?  That depends on the child.  For some, it may be best to wait until the move is a sure thing.  Some children can be told when moving is just an idea.  You are the best judge.

Reconcile the move in your mind first.  Children often reflect their parent's attitudes.

Communicate.  Approach children with a "we know moving is hard" attitude and talk with them about their concerns and fears.

Give children a sense of control.  For toddlers, let them choose which toys go in the car and which go in the moving van.  For teens, share your concerns and ask them for support.  Also, let them be the ones who announce the move to relatives and friends.  Give them responsibilities such as organizing their rooms or planning the move of pets.
