I got a notice from NewEgg today including a surprise invoice for $299.97.

"What the heck?!"  I couldn't recall a purchase, let alone for $300.  Phishing?  Scamming?  ID theft?

So I went to my NewEgg account, and there it was.  3 upgrades to Windows 7 Professional.

Great! I will have them by the end of the week and will start planning my changeover from W7 Release Candidate to W7 "For Real."  That will probably be a format and reload sometime over the Christmas-New Year's period.

W7 RC has been pretty good.  The most interesting difficult items have been related more to Internet Explorer 8 functionality, with a few freezes and shutdowns.  It seems that IE hates it when I click a moving mouse.

I wonder what changes I will see moving from Ultimate to Pro?  I haven't used Windows Media Center, and that is the biggest difference, I think.

I think I'll probably get a new PC with the new version of Windows already on it rather than upgrade.

I'll hold the PC manufacturer accountable to make sure the new operating system is ported properly to the computer.

It should be a major improvement over Vista.  I'll upgade soon, hopefully not at $300.

I'm not falling for it this time.  I already know that half my old software won't work with Vista, and several of my hardward items won't work with it either.  Enough is enough.

Are you upgrading from Vista Pro? I hope you'll post on your success/isues with Windows 7...I always like to hear what others think of a Windows product before I commit!

Ralph,

I saved a few bucks buying refurbs this summer and have been running the W7 Release Candidate software ever since I bought them in August.  I am positively sold on W7 as an upgrade from Windows XP.

Jeff.

My $300 was for three W7 Professional 64 bit copies at 50% discount from Retail.  I ordered them in July.

Gregg,

With the move to put more stuff on-line, I find that I am not giving up much in terms of software.  And Compatibility Mode made my legacy Dell printer with no Vista or Win7 64 bit driver work in moments.

SarahGray,

I have never used a Vista machine.  I have copies that came with my new desktops, and will upgrade my laptop from Windows XP.

I hate upgrades and change to a system that works but in our business it guess it is inevitable.

Terry Bonnie,

OTOH, I replaced a 22 year old Mercedes with a 2007 Ford Edge, and the improvements in engineering and design since the 1980's have provided me with great enjoyment.  I see similar opportunity between W7 and XP.

It will break your heart to know how inexpensive it is to upgrade on a Mac. ;-)

Susie,

I think my two Core i7 machines came in at a price of about one mac.

$99.99 per OS upgrade wasn't too painful on top of that.

But, I am on the record, MS will bring me joy over the next couple of years, or I will lay my heart on the line with Apple.

Hmmm...$300 for an upgrade. I have XP, never did have Vista...I remembered all the issues the agents at KW Cary were having with Vista and I avoided it on purpose. Bought one of the few laptops I could find that still ran on XP about 2.5 years ago.

Now, I wonder, how long will it take to work the 'kinks' out of W7. I'm thinking I'll be due for a new laptop in the next year, so maybe I just wait until I'm hearing good things about it.

On the other hand, I was just talking with a friend the other day about switching to a Mac and from what I know (which isn't much-I depend heavily on guys like you for my information), it sounds like the front end cost of a Mac can save me big time on gray hair and frustration ; )

I think I will wait a while for the reviews to come in on 7. Then maybe get a new machine instead of upgrading(I'm still using XP so the new machine may be the better option)

I'm so happy with Windows Vista that I won't be upgrading to Windows 7. My old Windows XP marchine, however, seems to be slowing down in its old age. Christmas might see a Windows 7 machine sitting over on that desk.

Claire,

Actually, the $300 was for THREE W7 upgrade versions.

I bought 3 makes @ $99 while they were on discount this summer.  Current retail price is $199.

Terry,

Some tech folks are reporting good success with W7 on older machines even if the Windows 7 Adviser says they are not compatible.  It seems that W7 may well run that much leaner than Vista.

Russel,

I like the upgrade over Windows XP.  I'm not sure there is a compelling reason to upgrade over Vista if you are happy.
