google-twitterWith today’s announcement of the Google-Twitter search deal and the Bing- Twitter search deal, it is more evident than ever that Twitter should be an important part of your SEO strategy.  Why?

Well, if Twitter results are going to appear in Google and Bing search results, don’t you think it’s a good idea you get your important information on Twitter?  Google is going to pull in what people have tweeted on Twitter. For example, if you search for "San Francisco Homes" in Google, you may see some tweets in the Google search results that relate to this search, and possibly even some of this http://search.twitter.com/search?q=San+Francisco+Homes integrated into the Google search results themselves.

It will be interesting to see how Google displays the tweets in their search results. Will they display them within their regular search or will it be a side option? I have concerns about spam issues. The spammers know how to hijack all the Twitter trending topics with their spam links. I hope Google has a good way to filter this stuff out.

So for all those who argued Twitter has no importance for SEO – think again.

Google+Twitter = important for SEO.
Bing+Twitter = important for SEO.

Thanks for posting Misty.  Our jury is still out on Twitter.  I'm just not seeing the return for the time spent on it.  AR and Facebook however have been great ways to communicate with our clients.

Misty,

Thanks for the heads up.  I am one of those who has resisted Twitter because I don't truly understand it, but if Google is in, then so am I.  Can't get enough of that Google Juice!

Misty you are so right and Twitter should be part of everyone's SMM mix.  Also today was announced that Facebook has made a deal with Bing so Facebook status updates will appear in search results also.  I have been seeing my Facebook notes indexed in good SERP positions on Google.

Index, index, makes me happy:)

Thanks Misty, this is good news. I have been using Twitter since I discovered it through Active Rain a few years ago. I didn't do much at first but I now have a time scheduled in my day to take a look at the posts and send out some Tweets, Re-Tweet, etc. I have started trying to make some direct contact to one person I follow a day. Admittedly, this doesn't always work.

For those who don't understand Twitter, the best thing to do is start using it. There really isn't any better way to get use to it. You don't have to follow a lot of people. Start with someone you know personally. If that doesn't work for you, pick a few people from Active Rain whose blogs you read regularly. Seeing what others do is a great way to learn Twitter. Be real but don't be offensive and never try and sell something on your initial contact with someone. There are a few rules and pitfalls and a Google search will bring up information for you.

A bonus - having a Twitter account means being able to link to it from Active Rain. Every time write a new blog post, a Tweet goes out with a link back to your blog. Great exposure.

Anyone interested, you can follow me on Twitter:  http://twitter.com/CathyCapasso

Thanks again for the information.

Sorry I am just now coming back to respond to some of these comments.

Rebecca- yes good news about the Facebook deal too.  Our FB business pages get indexed by Google very quickly.

Hi Steve- yes we have noticed this too.  FB and Twitter are becoming more valuable for SEO.

Hello Catherine - I think some people worry too much about what to post and what not to post on Twitter.  There seems to be so many different rules our there that were created by so many different people.  We simply post what interests us and what is relevant to our customers and our industry.  We also post updates about our services too.  We figure the people that follow us on Twitter are the ones that are interested in what we have to say and offer.  All others don't have to follow us.

Missy your statement "I will have to make sure I post with my key words about Ann Abor Real Estate and Saline Real Estate" shows you get exactly what I am trying to say. :)

Twitter's 140-character limit seems perfect for a couple of keywords and a link to more content. I'm curious to see how Google and Bing integrate tweets into search results. My guess is Google will separate these like they do with Images and Video.

hey Misty!  I hope that those of us that have been putting the good stuff on Twitter will be rewarded and that somehow the Search Engines will distinguish between the meat & the potatoes!

Hi Chris and Stephanie - glad you stopped by.  I love your new photo.  Very slick!

Hello John - yes it will be interesting to see how Google and Bing display these.

Hi Scott- I have read different things on how Bing/Google will rate and filter tweets for displaying in results.  It will be interesting to see what gets pulled in.  Hopefully the same spammers that hijack the trending topics won't make it in the results but we will see.
