It seems my posts are getting ugly. Or perhaps, more correctly, the comments are.

The Ugg spammers are very active once again. At least they like my posts. I had 6 Ugg spam comments today.

I hate spam - all kinds

Don't get me wrong, I rather like Uggs, and they are very popular here in California. In the chilly weather folks wear them with shorts. I'm no style critic, but that's kinda odd - my opinion - but popular nonetheless. I have a pair of Ugg slippers that are wonderful so I can't criticize too much. Especially since I wear them to the grocery store sometimes.

But the Ugg spammers. Take a hike please. You're annoying.

One good thing. They tend to pop up on old posts, which, after deleting their spam, reminds me to update the post. But that's the ONLY good thing.

Are you seeing uggly stuff too?

What is an ugg spammer comment? I've only been on AR a few weeks, so I'm still not up to date on many things. Ugg spammer???

Taylor - well you are lucky if you have not been spammed. They leave a spam comment that has nothing to do with your ppost but is all about uggs - which are shoes and boots from Australia. There is usually a link to a website (don't click this) and a bunch of other nonsense. If I get another I will cut and paste it into the post.

I've noticed it on some but hasnt hit mine yet. But I bet once I publish this, I'll have some. Guess it's time to re-activate the member's only comments.

Hey Jeff, careful there with the Spam comments, it's a major staple here in Hawaii.  Visit a supermarket and you will find the cans stacked in the isleway.  But no, I don't eat the stuff myself and don't enjoy the email kind either.

Thanks for the reminder Jeff that I probably should buy a pair of Uggs, ;-)

...but the last thing I want to do is encourage their spamming.

I've deleted a few  Ugg comments too.

Careful updating old posts.  I heard a rumor that action causes a reduction in points.  Check with Bob for clarification.

My understanding is that a member discovered that updating old posts awarded points and that they went on an updating jag.  So, AR began taking points when old posts were updated.

I could be completely wrong about this.  It's just something that I heard and don't care enough to verify, if anyone would tell me anyway.

Since I've no longer #1, that point monkey is off my back.

Don't just delete it, click the 'report a concern' button at the bottom of the comment. Hopefully, the AR gods can find an IP address to ban. I just did a post on this earlier this week myself.

Jeff - I'm noticing these ugg spammers here too, which I reported to AR. Have not deleted them yet, then again my comments are more manageable than yours', I think.

Loreena - well they don;t seem as prolific as the other spammers that we see now and then.

Sharon - I did';t think I was alone.

Tim - there are others who feel the same. Anyone disagree?

JAne - maybe you'll be lucky. Of course they hit this post too, but I reported it then deleted.

Richard - I magine you can find it here, too. I've never looked - maybe I will now.

Rick - LOL.

Lenn - hmmm. I should check. I don;t see why points would be added, or deleted is all you do is edit a post. But I seemto recall there were issues in the past. THe thing I have seen is that the formatiing on old posts that originally looked fine has changed. I'll look into it.

Julia - Oh I DO  report it, each and everey time. And I usually don't delete immediately so they have a little time to do whatever it is they do.

Petra - oh, don't count on that. Some posts have few comments.

John - that's what we are supposed to do.

I have just recently started receiving the spam comments and report them everytime.  Reminds me of Spam Fest down in Goodland, Florida every year...  Everyone dresses as their favorite spam dish (seriously).  I never actually participated, but it sure was a lot of fun to see.

Jeff when I see someone spamming someones blog it takes away any creditability that they might have had with me, and I refuse to click on their links.  To bad that they do not seem to realize how bad spamming makes them look.

George - agreed. Plus clicking on the links can be dangerous. :)

Susie - lucky you.

Canned spam at least has a purpose in life and thanks to Taylor for asking, I wasn't sure what Ugg spam was either...I was trying to come up with an acronym that fit but was fruitless

Hey, Jeff - Several points for you and your readers:

  1. If you love your ActiveRain points, use the "Report a Concern" button on the spam comments and DO NOT DELETE it. The ActiveRain gurus apparently note the IP address and block it, then delete the spam comment, and then give you 10 points for reporting the spam comment. This works regardless of where you find the spam comment -- your blog or someone else's blog.
  2. There was a points glitch that apparently went from December 2008 to May 2009 so that if one updated one's profile, one could get points for updating, but waaaaaaaay beyond the maximum. Several people were up in the 10,000 point range for their profile and lost those points when the new scoring system went into effect May 1. Those whom I know who requested their points back got them back.
  3. The points glitch also affected -- and still affects -- updating old posts. The change in HTML that occurred in November 2008 deleted many videos, pictures, and formatting from old posts, thereby making them look unprofessional (crappy, in other words) and some didn't even make sense anymore with the pictures and videos gone. According to Bob, there is no current plan to correct this glitch anytime soon.
  4. There is a current points glitch that affects commenting on old posts, but it is inconsistent. I think Bob got his most recent contest idea from me because I use my ActiveRain blog as my primary marketing tool, so I send a lot of prospective Clients and Realtors to my blog via links to specific posts, and past Clients regularly read my blog. If one of them happens to comment on a post that was put up prior to May 1, 2009, points can be lost, sometimes up to 237 that I'm aware of. This glitch also has no current plan to correct it anytime soon.
