I love technology and gadgets and who doesn't. My job as a Connecticut home inspector allows me to buy cool stuff and use for my job. How great is that!

radiatorOne of my favorite tools and most costly is the infrared camera. This device measures the surface temperature of anything you point it at in real time. It can actually seem like you are looking through an object, but in fact are seeing the differences in temperature due to material composition, density and other variables.

On a recent inspection I was scanning a home with a steam heating system. The rooms all had older cast iron radiators. I pointed the camera at one of these old heaters and thought the image was kind of cool.

You can actually see where the steam wafts up from the pipe on the left and distributes through the radiator. The temperature at the top near the pipe, about 190 degrees or more. VERY HOT!  At the drain pipe on the right about 80 degrees.the real thing

Technology can reveal hidden information to us and help us do our jobs better for our customers. And sometimes it's just fun to use.

James, I love gadgets. But you took it up a notch. You created art. Quick, find a local gallery. :) Kate

The home inspector I use regularly has recently begun using infrared during inspections.  It has been instrumental in finding "problems", thus saving my buyers the burden of correcting repair-issues that would have otherwise been their responsibility.

Kate, As I recall you have a fancy trash can. It is a cool picture, but art?

Tom, IR is a great tool for revealing the invisible.

Charlie, I do.

Well, I was just pointing out that you could make a lot of money if you frame the image and take it to a gallery. But, ya know, if you don't see the need...

What a cool tool!  Why can't my husband buy those toys instead of guns and 4 wheelers and hunting stuff and golf clubs?  But he'd use it on me and point out how I'm not very hot!

I like those photos too. They are always very colorful, even if pretty much the same colors all the time that I see them. I like violet and yellow.

Kate, Don't see the need for art or money?

Barbara, I don't think you would want your husband spending his money on an IR camera. The "cheap" ones cost $4 - 5000.

Steve, You can actually change the color palettes if you like. The one I use above is very good for energy auditing.

Very cool James...I had one HERS rater show me a picture where a headboard could be seen through an outside wall...now there's a home that needs insulation!

Love your photo AND the explanation!!!
