I cannot sing.  It is pretty much unanimous among the people who know and love me that I cannot sing.  I don't care what those people say, I love to sing.  I sing all day, all night and every time I am in the car.  Max, my 13 year old has a request.  That I do not sing in the car.  Pffttt.  Too bad, I say.  I try to refrain when he has his friends in the car, but sometimes, it just pops out.  I can think of a song for almost anything my kids say to me.  The latest conversation with Max was whether or not 13 is too young to have a girlfriend.  I think so.  He disagrees.  Next thing I know I am singing "they try to tell us we're too young".

My own mother regularly turns off her hearing aides when I sing.  Seriously.  I do have a few loyal friends that insist that I sing well, but frankly, I think they are lying!  The other problem is that I am hearing impaired.  This is a two part problem.  The one part is that I can honestly not hear how bad I am and the other part is I rarely get the words right, because I didn't hear them correctly in the first place.  Lyrics.com is one of my favorite places!

When I look at my dog, I burst into " who loves you pretty JJ, who's always there to make it right, who loves pretty doggie, who's gonna help you through the night, who loves you....., who's gonna love you love you...".

I also love to sing happy birthday to my friends on their birthday.  This is generally greeted with either a groan or laugh but always with the words, "you don't have to sing the entire song".  I ignore this.  I am making joyful noise!

When I am particularly exasperated with my life, I sing the song from Moulin Rouge... "One Day I'll fly away, leave all this to yesterday".

On the first day of school in September, when "mom held hostage" is over, I can be heard belting out Barbra Streisand's "Free again"!

I love Broadway musicals and have been known to sing all of the parts!  Not well, but hey... if the only songs you heard in the forest were from the birds that sang well, it would be a pretty damn quiet forest!  There's a quote from someone in there, but for the moment, I can't remember who said it.  My favorite musical is They're Playing our Song!

Sing, sing a song.  Sing out loud.  Sing out strong.  Sing of good things, not bad..... Sing of happy, not sad!  Sing, sing a song.  Make it simple to last your who life long.  don't worry that it's not good enough, for anyone else to hear, just sing... sing a song!!!

So, for today, 10/22/09, I am thankful for music.  It makes our souls soar, it lightens our load, it brings us together.  In my case, it makes people laugh!  So sing!  Sing a song!

Carpe Diem!

Here I am singing away.  Insignificant Other has also informed me on many, many occasions that I cannot carry a tune either.  I, too, have a hearing impairment, but I used too perform and SING...so I must not be that bad.  Anyway, a day without a song is hardly worth getting up for, IMHO!!!!

Carpe Diem indeed.  When I first met my wife, she told me that she loves to sing.  Later, when I learned that she was a terrible singer, I questioned her, and she said "I told you that I loved to sing.... I never said I was any good".

You know Susie- it's too funny the little life lessons I learn from you.. I'm making a vow to stop telling my sweet husband to NOT sing in the car.  And he's not bad... I'm just easily annoyed by noise.  So he still can't jingle change in his pocket, but I'll let him sing in the car.

Susan, this is great.  I'm so thrilled that I'm not the only one who inflicts this kind of pain on their child and friends. :)  By the time my son was 5, he knew all the words to all the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd songs. LOL :)   Then we had to make a deal, that if I wanted to sing in the car, I'd have to listen to some of the RAP he likes to listen to.  Now he's sorry, because I sing that too. :)

It's a wonderful thing.  Keep singing.  Sometimes I sing, even while I'm crying.  Singing lifts your mood, and even whe/if we don't sing well, it makes people laugh.  It doesn't matter they are laughing AT us.  It just matters we made them laugh. :)

Carpe diem!

Susan, I do this.  I sing just about anywhere I am when there is a good song on!  I can't sing to save my life but I do anyway...I have learned NOT to dance in my local CVS :)  (Do you get the same weird looks I get?)

My kids hate when I sing too. But I usually do it just to embarass them!  :)

Susan,

You have to do the Italian singing in this bro/sis duo. I am so tone deaf, even I don't like how I sound.

Hi Suzanne! I am in complete agreement that a day without a song is a day with a laugh!  xxoo

Allison, I also love to dance.   My kids hate that as well!  Oh, and they hate that I smile all of the time because they say it makes men think I am flirting!  lol!

Alan, I knew I loved your wife!  Carpe Diem!

Tammy, if you are easily annoyed by noise, you should thank you lucky stars we are long distance friends!!  I am a noisy person!!  Let Donald sing his heart out... it's good for the soul!

Sylvie, when my kids were little, instead of singing the wheels on the bus song, they would go around singing, who am I, I'm Jean Valjean!!  lol!  I was never into Pink Floyd but I had a distinctly disco era at one time.  Bad girl, bad girl your such a dirty bad girl, beep, beep, uh huh!  I also learned not to worry about the distinction between being laughed at or with.  Just leave them laughing!  xxoo

Liz, it would be my honor to sing for you!!

Loreena, most people are their own worst critics... this is true with the exception of my singing.  I think I'm pretty good, most people think I'm pretty bad!

Carol, memories.... all alone in the moonlight!  I think in pictures and songs!

Carole, if weird looks were money I would be retired!  As far as CVS goes, I was asked on a date a few years ago while laughing out loud at the greeting cards.  I replied that I was married and then asked if he liked blonds.  I then set him up to meet my best friend!  It didn't work out, but it was fun trying to play match maker.

Robby, I love to embarrass my kids too!  I'm glad to hear I may see you at Triple Play!

Rich, we can sing together because I won't be able to tell if you are singing badly!!

This is so eerie Susan. That sing, sing a song, tune of yours went right through my head when I read your title. You keep singing Susan. It is what you are destined to do, and every bird should sing. We ALL count!!!

Hi Susan...Your hearing may be impaired but you don't want to be hidding out in the back seat of my car when I think I'm all alone.  I turn up the voume so high (so I can't hear myself) and sing to my heart's content.

Kate, if I am hiding in your back seat and you started to sing, I would climb up front and we could do a duet!

Susan, Jean Valjean is popular here too. LOL  I can't believe it.  You brought back some memories alright ...

Between the Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, or the Scorpions, Alex certainly had a huge choice to make each morning.  Now, I mostly listen to rap when we're in the car together. :)

It's not all noises Susie... but there are things that drive me totally nuts... like someone clicking a pen, picking at their nails, shacking change in their pocket... those things make me a bit insane.  And when my Donald sings... it's not in his usual voice which i love, it's just a shade higher and I want to push him out of the car when he really gets going, but I'll pray for more strength to "deal" with it internally.

Susan - Singing is great for the soul !  I am the best singer when I am in my car alone and in the shower.  Especially when the music is on, I sound just like the singer !  But in reality, I suck.  I do not care : )  Carpe diem is right !

Susan - we should all be thankful for what we can voice. I used to do karaoke, but only started it after I lost my voice. You might not sing well, but your writing certainly is music to the eyes and mind.
