A few months ago I sent a letter to a childhood friend, Carol Moran Thorton, who now lives an hour north of San Francisco.

Over dinner at the  Spinnaker Restaurant in Sausalito, CA we determined that we had not seen each other for 43 years, but we spent 4+ hours trying to catch up.  Fortunately our husbands found things in common because I think we pretty much ignored them most of the evening. As kids growing up in Oil City, PA our nickname was the "Pearl Avenue Magpies"  because magpies chatter a lot.  I guess we haven't lost our touch.

Carol & her husband, Ken, agreed to pick us up at the cruise terminal and were our tour guides for several hours before taking us over the Golden Gate Bridge.  Carol's choice of restaurants could not have been better as  the Spinnaker Restaurant was beyond comparison.  Even though Carol & I were busy talking, we did enjoy an excellent meal  of crab cakes and sworfish accompanied by our favorite chardonay wine.  Upon returning home in PA we found a bottle on our doorstep, complements of Carol & Ken.

A toast to you, Carol & Ken.     A toast to friendship

John--Yes, San Francisco is magical, but it paled compared to an old friendship.  We covered so many topics, but more remain.  I think we could pick up our friendship where we left off 43 years ago.

Zane--Where have you been for so many months?  It is so good to hear from you again.  Hope all is well.  Plan to attend ZOO BOO 2009.  It is great!  Stop at an Erie McDonald's to get coupons worth $.50 off each ticket.

Carra--Our day started at 5:30 on the upper deck to see the ship go under the Golden Gate Bridge.  What a day!  More details will be forthcoming.

I'm glad you were able to reconnect with your friend.  San Francisco is a beautiful city and has so many good restaurants.  Did you try their clam chowder or sourdough bread?

How wonderful to see your friend after so many years. Isn't it funny how after that much time has passed you've still got that special bond of friendship.

Lee & Carol--That is so true.  Growing up in a small community everyone knew your entire family.  Our parents were often the car pool drivers or chaparones.  So many memories.  Now my mother is the only one still alive from the five original "Pearl Avenue Magpies."

Diana--Yes, we did pick up like it was just yesterday.  We had a lot of ground to cover.  It is fun to relive the evening by writing about it.

Thanks for the opportunity to share with you & AR members.

Hi Mary...It is amazing how fast the years go by and yet how swiftly they disappear when we see someone special again.

Kate--How true.  From the moment Carol & I hugged each other we talked non-stop.  A few minutes loater we realized that the guys were talking and we had not officially introduced them.  Fortunately they survived for four hours.  Now I want to see her again.
